Comment:

This is the sequel to my first compilation, and another foray into the magnificent scope of the cello. This time around I decided that there needed to be some serious classical representation, and so I narrowed it down to two tunes:

Johannes Brahms' Sonata for Cello & Piano, a famous and spectacular piece of work. I had to opt for one of the shorter pieces (time was tight on this mix), but the Allegro Molto is a particularly striking track. For more info on the whole work, see here. Rostropovich performs the actual piece, a very famous cellist in his own right, who is up there with the performer of my other selection.

Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor. This is heart-wrenching. One of my favorite pieces of classical music. Info on the work here. Yo-Yo Ma, one of the world's best, is the chosen performer, and here he definitely does the job. Great stuff.

No room for Bach though, maybe next time! As for the rest, there's another good dose of pop, experimental, and whatnot. The cello strains on the second track are a little more subtle than usual, but I really couldn't resist using it - everyone needs to dig their teeth into Mahogany - one of the greatest dream-pop bands I've ever heard. There's also a nice big folkish representation this time around. Devendra Banhart, Rasputina, The Winks and Forest all bring their share to the table.

Thanks to Jenergy for the Rasputina track, and thanks to lanhamyodel for the Penguin CafT Orchestra!

Your fantastic "As Sparks Fly Upward" raised the bar for instrument-based mixes. This follow-up looks equally impressive. Can't wait to hear it.

Yo-yo is okay, but I like Rostropivch. I have three versions of Bach's Cello concertos. Nice complilation and welcome to the gang of roughneck musicologists!

Just as lovely as the first one, and I'm glad to see you've given Rasputina a good home.

I thought volume 1 (which you very kindly sent me) was great - this looks just as good. Can I have a copy? Pretty please?

Beautiful! I absolutely love the look of these volumes. Great to see that Forest track there - a favourite of mine, and I absolutely love Brahms too..

This is super! The cello is definitely my favorite orchestral stringed isntrument (although I played violin for years!). Eclectic and very listenable, I love that Elgar piece too...

There's always room for cello!
I'm not sure how it would go over as a "mix" but I've been playing corresponding movements of the Bach Cello Suites by Casals, Rostropovich, & Yo-Yo Ma, & as it turns out they're ALL the best!

I'd quite like to hear both of these cello compilations if you're into trading & if any of my mixes would qualify for a trade-in -
