And thus the universe began, not with a bang but a cosmic murmur. Over thirteen billion years ago the fabric of the universe unravelled in immeasurable clouds of scorching gas and vast waves of subatomic particles. Over time and out of the immense and frenetic whirlpool of creation, the Tlan vital (or `vital force') of our universe shaped order out of chaos, and there emerged the great clouds of gas, stars and galaxies of which we are now but an intricate part. Roughly three billion years later, our own Milky Way galaxy swirled into existence, and six billion years after that the first single-celled creature awoke on a lonely life-friendly planet. From there arose the Cambrian explosion, a biological outburst like no other, self-organized by a blind watch-maker and forever evolving, forever growing in complexity; water, fire, earth, forest, rivers, lakes, oceans, mountains, glaciers, trees, flowers, rain, thunder, and clouds; insects, reptiles, birds, mammals, life-forms of every design. and, before the advent of man, so untouched, so sublime, so primal. The earth, a living organism, revolved in harmony around the sun, and the universe, after billions of years of cosmic serenity, knew nothing else.
