The Eternal - A Tribute to the Music of Joy Division & New Order
Comment:
After doing one of these for The Velvet Underground I decided to assemble a collection of covers of Manchesters finest. I left out Grace Jones and Paul Young for the good of humanity. Some nice moments here, favourites for me are FrentT's beautiful rendition of Bizarre Love Triangle and Iron & Wine's take on Love Vigilantes.Feedback:
Wonderful cover, Barry. I was never a fan of the music but I was always surprised pleasantly that the bands achieved so much continued fame espite the odds of pre-MTV America. But, really, isn't Godley & Creme Manchester's finest? poke poke
I am a fan, Barry. Your tribute intrigues me. Many of these versions are unknown to me. Yet their titles taunt me with their familiarity. I trust your judgement, however. Your cunning reworking of the "Closer" label is a masterpiece. And the mix title -- from the same album -- is perfect. You keep making mixes that I wish I had. I commend you. I notice that jonpoi mentions Godley & Creme -- now there's another potentially fine mix just waiting to be unleashed.
Lovely tribute. But who is better: Joy Division or New Order? I wonder if Rob Conroy and Thomas Mohr have an opinion on the matter.
Excellent, though I must admit, Joy Division never did anything for me and New Order did even less.
Nice mix. I was aware of quite a few of these, but I didn't know the Aislers Set & Affordable Floors tracks and they're both great.
I love freebies!
I love freebies!
nice going! oh, and in response to orchid, who cares which band is better? i think it's amazing enough that both once existed.
This is great, thanks for the tracks. Frente's cover has always been a favorite of mine.
Well done, fritz 1. Nipped that one in the bud nicely.
Damn, I'll have to try harder next time.
This is a great mix. Nice choice ending it with the Iron & Wine cover (not a big fan, I have to admit, but that song is one of the best I've heard in a long time).
As for your comment about Owen Ashworth/CftPA: I respect your opinion whole-heartedly. When I made that mix, I hadn't heard any of Ettiquette with the exception of "Young Shields." Now that I've heard it in full, and talked to a few lo-fi purists who now bash Ashworth for "selling out," (they like to compare him to the Books, who most now despise because of the success of Lost and Safe) I can completely understand where you're coming from.
My question to most of these people: why do you love the Microphones/Mt. Eerie so much? Mr. Elv(e)rum has been able to mix both melody and lo-fi for years, and people keep going back for more.
Anyway, that's enough bullshit from me. I'm really enjoying looking at all your mixes.
P.S.-In answer to the question Orchid posed, Joy Division is better.
