Comment:
Because I've been a horn player since I was eleven, I've been a Swing fan since I was twelve. I bought Glenn Miller and Woody Herman albums when I was in Junior High and saw Count Basie and Stan Kenton when I was in High School, so when the movie "Swingers" came out in '96 and the Swing Revival followed I was in all my glory. What caught me about it was that they were generally getting Big Band sound out of three and four player horn sections. Some of the artists, like Joe Jackson and Brian Setzer were covering 30's and 40's era Swing and Jump but alot of the others, like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the Cherry Poppin Daddies and the Atomic Fireballs came out of the Punk and Ska scene and brought a more intense energy and alot earthier lyrics. Then there were the Sqquirrel Nut Zippers, who were kind of lumped into this "Movement" but were really from another planet. The boom hit like lightning, one week I was watchin Voodoo Daddy in a medium sized club, the next month they were on the Superbowl and just as quickly, it was over. By 2000 Swing Dance nights were being replaced by Latin Dance lessons and the Zippers were breakong up.
So this is my tribute to that short period of fun and the bands that made it so. Title is from the Blues Jumpers.
Feedback:
Very nice. Love the #4 and #12 pick. "Think I will throw back another bottle of beer" to this.
Fun!
This looks fun as hell. Like any musical craze, the bandwagon jumpers pale in comparison to the originals. But that first wave of the swing revival was a breath of fresh air - it was great to see people having fun with music again. You've got most of my faves here.
Well done!
Great! I'm gonna disagree a bit with Mr. Slack. Most of the bandwagoneers pale, but there are some exceptions - I like the idea of "swing" (or for that matter, surf) played by kids raised on punk rock; adds a lot of energy.
I swing both ways (original & revival), & how else are you going to keep the music alive?
This looks like a great sampler & I hope I have a chance to hear it someday -

God damnit! I thought Be-Bop killed this stuff off for good ;-) Looks like a wonderful collection. Love the Joe Jackson picks in particular.
Lookin' Good! Would like to hear this myself.
I saw Big Bad Voodoo Daddy At the House of Blues in Las Vegas last year. Something about the fact that we were in Vegas and I am a stupid Swingers fan, I dunno, it was unreal. This Mix reminded me of Vegas and a lot of good times. Thank You.
Anything with this much Jumping has to be a good thing!
This is hot.
Not really my ball o' wax, but I'm sure this is very well-done.
This looks like lots of fun. I'm an old horn player myself.
When I first saw the mix title in the index, I immediately thought of the BR5-49 song of the same title. Thought the mix was gonna be a down-home "take this job and shove it" theme. But how great a surprise to find a Swing mix. So much swing, in fact, that I'm out of breath just reading the titles. An excellent job, Mark. From one old horn player to another.
