Comment:
This mix underwent quite a few changes before arriving at this state. It began as a follow-up to "Cherokee Dogs" but took on a life of its own as I went along. The general idea took shape early, but a lot of fine tuning and other tweaking had to take place along the way. About the title: My brother and I used to play marathon games of NBA Action while jamming on Rally's. The object wasn't to defeat your opponent, but utterly humiliate them. Close games were nice, but a grand blow-out was even more fun (especially for the winner). Anyway, he would always be the Bullets so he could play as Tom Gugliotta (a career 13ppg player) and have him regularly drop in 50 or 60 points. About the songs: 1)Had to be the opener from the earliest stages of development. 2) Any song with a sample from Fat Albert HAS to be respected. 3)Overplayed and oversampled, perhaps, but a brilliant song. 4)Best song I've heard all year (and Gone Daddy Gone is pretty sweet too). 5)Smooth funk soul from a Tracks magazine sampler. 6)Old School brilliance. 7)No, its not Egg Man. Another oft-sampled musical gem. 8)More Danger Mouse hilarity and brilliance, downloadable from adultswim.com. 9)Long before Jacko, there was a superbly talented singer named Michael Jackson. Sad and unfortunate. 10)Dub-funk-whatever from Gorillaz. Flawless as always. 11)Another in the long list of artists who I discover too late. RIP Desmond. 12) As politically incorrect as they want to be. Still a great song. 13)The Biz meets School House Rock. How could you possibly lose? 14)A real gem from a criminally underapprecitated artist. 15)Not my first choice for a Marley cut, but the more I listen to it in the context of this mix, the better it sounds. 16) Heard this song on a recent trip to Maryland and I knew I had to include it. I debated using the 4 minute single mix, but how could I possibly turn down the opportunity to use eleven-plus minutes of Mavin Gaye. Sublime. 17)A blast from the past and a great song. Period. Mesh 88.
