Comment:
180 minutes long, monster 2 tape collection. The final installment of my 2-part discopolis series that started 8 months ago, and my first mix in almost 3 months (the absence felt longer). While the first one was themed after Fritz Lang's Metropolis, this one is themed after a totally different envisioning of the classic movie. In 2001 the animated Japanese movie Metoroporisu (aka Metropolis) directed by the great Rintaro (Astro Boy, Phoenix, Kimba)debuted. It differs alot from the original Metropolis story. Mainly through the different characters and how they relate to each other this time around. Especially Tima, the new version of Maria, but Tima is a child and she is a robot, she has no human counterpart. The animation is beautiful, very stylish, and while more character development would have helped the movie tremendously, it is ultimately satisfying, with tons of great moments, even for anime haters. The movie was adapted from the grreat comics of Osamu Tezuka (the hero of Japanese everywhere who created Astro Boy and hundreds of other characters during his long career). If you haven't seen this movie (and especially if you have never heard about it) this is a flick you should catch, Roger Ebert loves it! I am really pleased with this Discopolis series, combined this is a 4 tape set that offers the listener exactly 80 of the best disco tracks out there. D I S C O P O L I S I I is not meant to be listened over Metropolis, but instead each tape side represents the movie in a correct yet expanded order. The first Discopolis was Bee gees heavy, DII features no Bee Gees and is instead ABBA heavy, with some great rare tracks like Dan Hartman's disco anthem (and one of the best disco songs I've ever heard) Relight My Fire preceeded by the intstrumental Vertigo. The 12" version of H.A.P.P.Y. Radio right at the end, done to mirror the radio at the end of the movie (watch it to find out). And the somewhat rare salvo of Spank, Move On Up (a great cover of the Curtis Mayfield original), Keep On Dancin', and Lovin' Is Really My Game. All somewhat overlooked disco greats.Feedback:
welcome back, Mr. Tapes. not sure what it is about summertime that's bringing out so many monster mixes, but I must say I'm partial to anything ABBA-heavy. especially when some of the weight is carried by Diana Ross, Boney M, EW&F, Love Unlimited Orch., SOS Band... and then there's that great Amii Stewart track. nicely done!
You sir, a brave man. Would never think of putting together something of this nature, but I bet it's a gas!
A guilty pleasure this is -- just like Deney Terrio's Dance Fever, back in the day.
love most of it
Your preview a few weeks back had me salivating with anticipation. Well it was worth the wait. I like the Silver Connection, Diana Ross, and Vicki Sue picks especially.
