Comment:
After spending most of last week with my wife and 1,100 other sweaty doll collectors at the National Barbie Doll Convention in Los Angeles, I decided to regain my sanity and post a summery JFTHOI* mix. It contains some old standbys (Beck, Margo Guryan, Acid House Kings), some fun covers (Shatner does Pulp, a steel drum band tackles Gary Numan) and a few new discoveries (Oh No! Oh My!, Islands and Amiel, who should be paying royalties to Gilbert O'Sullivan -- they sound just like him!). Wanna quiz? Be the first to tell me what kind of doll is on the cover (no, it's not a Barbie), and I'll send you a copy. *Just For The Hell Of It
Feedback:
Doll convention? I probably blow my brains out if I had to go... props to you Ion for keeping your sanity. Lots of pop goodness I'm digging here.
oh my. saw your comment on Orchid's mix but was sure you were kidding. lots of great-looking new stuff here (would love to hear #3), but #15 is an old favorite. swell job!
Captain Kirk sure squeezes the soul outta that Pulp tune. Can't say if the katzenjammers do the same for Gary Numan. Would that be a Blythe doll?
Um, it's a "sweaty doll," the exact kind those 1100 people collect. Can't wait to hear the mix! Go Pipettes!
Congratulations Fishbulb! (who just joined AOTM today. Now stop lurking and post a mix!) Yes, that would be a Blythe doll. I'll e-mail you for your address.
Ruddy marvellous. Love the 14-16 & 23-25 stretches in particular, but the whole thing looks grrreat. That doll sure is a cutie :)
There's a concept....a Gilbert O'Sullivan cover band! Like what I know on here.
Good stuff. Ive been liking that Oh No! Oh My! album a lot. Nice 14-17 run too.
This looks like one of your best mixes, Moe, and that's saying something! Super-cool. I have no idea what type of doll that is, but I'd love a copy, anyway, if any of my stuff interests you...
Damn, I wish I'd got here sooner! (although knowing the answer would also have helped :) ) This looks bee-yoo-ti-ful, as always; I love that little Beck/Mint Royale bit, and the Bobbie Gentry and Echo & the Bunnymen tracks are also great picks. I haven't heard Oh No! Oh My! but it looks like I'll have to do some research. Good stuff.
eye-poppingly fun.
Just wonderful, as usual. I'm always torn whether I like that McNee/Blackman cut better than Kinky Boots.
If you want to pick up a bar bee, this sure as hell looks like a promising way to lure her into your dollhouse.
Dolls scare me.
I've always been partial to that Haircut 100 track. The doll looks keen. (Or should I say "Keane?")
Only two Swedish acts ? too bad I was hoping you should use Peter; Bjorn and Johns summer smash Young folks on your mix, BTW dig this of course
Nice mix. Can't sleep. Dolls will kill me.
Sir, I must hear this SOON! Do they serve malt beverages at the conference??
That doll sure does good eye-contact (my word, I need to see a doctor!)Lots to love (and a couple for me, at least, to hate), but looks like a stonking great mix. That William Shatner is fantastic, as is rainy Jane. Good stuff . . . . By the way, sorry it has taken me so long to comment, haven't been able to access AOTM for some time - must be DJ Karen's influence).
Looks very good - what me know me likey very muchly
Terrific! I love Islands. I also like that Chris Lucie (sic) song, and not only because my brother's name is Chris.
How did I miss this one..?! (You're a glutton for....love Ion! Barbie Coventions are your new thang!)
A steel drum version of "Cars" has the potential to be just about the best thing ever.
So is Blythe inspired by Mark Rydell?
