Comment:
It's back! Kids Rock! returns with another chapter of music made by precocious, moderately talented children with untrained cloying voices. What better way to commemorate the fifth anniversary of my first post at Art of the Mix? Honestly, most of this stuff is quite good, and if it's bad, well all the better. Thomas Mohr, Joey de Vivre and Skinny Robbie all contributed to the delinquency of this mix - so thanks! Some notes:Unit 3 & Venus - Venus, an 8-year-old girl from Long Beach, fronted Unit 3 (a.k.a. her parents and uncle), who played keyboards, drums and bass. They made several appearances on New Wave Theater and were Rodney on the ROQ favorites in the early 80s
Andy & David Williams - Nephews of crooner Andy Williams, these identical twins released a couple albums in the mid-70s. The 14-year-olds rivaled each other for Susan Dey's affection on an episode of the Partridge Family. Who could blame them?
Finger 5 - These kids were Japan's answer to the Jackson 5 in the mid-70s. They wore similar fringe outfits, stole their dance steps and even permed their hair like the J-5, though none of them were named Tito.
Cathy Rich - The 12-year-old daughter of famed drummer Buddy sings on this swingin' version of the Sonny & Cher hit, recorded live with dad in 1967.
The Cowsills - The band's rarely heard youngest members John, 10, and Barry, 11, sing lead on this 1966 b-side. Barry's body was found earlier this year, a victim of Hurricane Katrina.
Toni Harper - Her 1948 recording of this song went platinum - not bad for an 8 year old, who even played Carnagie Hall a few years later.
Brighter Side of Darkness - Their 1973 one hit wonder was sung (or spoken) by 12-year-old Darryl Lamont, who was more interested in a foxy classmate than receiving a passing grade on a test. Cheech & Chong also had a hit with the parody "Basketball Jones."
Pookey Blow - Connecticut record store owner/dj Tony Pearson tried to pass off his 12-year-old nephew as a relative of legendary rapper Kurtis Blow. This 6-minute rap, released in 1979, quotes the Sugarhill Gang and includes a vicious kazoo solo. Pookey never found fame, and now serves in the Army.
Gary & the Hornets -These mid-60s Ohio players consisted of the Calvert brothers: Gary, 11, on guitar and vocals, Greg, 14, on bass, and Steve, 7, on drums. Here they are covering the Troggs.
Lollipops - The sexual metaphor of this song was probably lost on this 60s Danish trio (aged 9-12), but that didn't stop them from wearing nothing but their tighty-whities in early press photos.
Billie Joe Armstrong - Long before the Green Day singer discovered mascara, the 5-year-old released this charming single the same year as the Sex Pistols' debut. Only about 50 copies were pressed, so check those thrift stores. It's worth a buck or two.
Las Dilly Sisters - These two exuberant chicas must have been about 5 years old when they covered this Standells' classic in 1968.
Yamasuki Singers - In 1971, two French producers assembled a children's chorus to sing on a "a fuzzed-out-educational-multi-cultural psych-rock-opera," inspired by Japanese music. The song was later covered by Bananarama, who changed the name to "Aie A Mwana."
The Keane Brothers - John and Tom were the youngest entertainers in history (ages 11 and 12, respectively) to host their own network variety television show, which lasted four weeks in 1977. Sadly, this song was their only hit.
Altyrone Deno Brown - Altyrone was the 7-year-old son of an independent Chicago label owner, who thought he could be the next Michael Jackson after he released a couple of his soulful singles in the early 70s. Unfortunately his recording career fizzled, but he did land a small role in the Blues Brothers movie.
Feedback:
What would a Kids Rock mix be without a quiz? Same question as before: identify all the kids on the cover. Be the first to correctly do so and you'll receive a free copy for show and tell. Good luck!
you rule, as usual. clearly we got some shirley temple on the cover. and some keane boys, i think. billie jo's shirt gives him away. that leaves.... one of the cowsills in that swell suit?
I'm again awed by your music collection. And excellent cover, as usual!
fun stuff as usußl, haven't a clue 'bout the kids
Firstly, happy mixoversary! I have to echo the opinions here that a) I'm in awe of your resources and b) you rule - this looks like it was bags of fun to put together and very amusing to boot. I do really like that Cathy Rich track. Cool piece of trivia about Billie Joe Armstrong too. My guess is that the guy in the snappy suit is Little Lord...otherwise I think that Sean has the answers spot-on!
Mind-boggling as always, darling, and for five years you've done nothing but get better and better.
I have no idea where you dig up all this terrible stuff, but it sure looks like 80 mins of sicko fun.
I agree with all below, you need to MAKE $$ putting this stuff together for a Rhino collection. I'm going to guess Sean is right except the guitar player in the suit is Gary (from the Hornets!)...
OOh a quiz! OK: Bottom right..Miss Temple. Above her..The Keane Brothers. To her left..Bille Joe Armstrong. Top left..Little Lord. Do i win? Pop Fact! Little Lord's backing band were named The Shatters. How nice! Top mix moe..
Sorry, It looks like Sean & Siobhan already got there. Sniff..
Can't believe you've produced 4 of these!!!! We are all fortunate for having known you and your never-ending stream of ever-impressive music collections.
This looks really intriguing and fun, like most of your stuff that features almost no songs that I know. :-) That said, I've always thought that "Pass the Dutchie" was a drug song, not a children's song... I could, however, just be crazy. *humming "Puff the Magic Dragon" as he proceeds along his merry cyber-way*
Like Herr Mohr says . . . . and like Rob says, I'm sure that pass the dutchie was a drug song . . . . maybe a drug song sung by kiddie drug peddlars?
This is priceless
Congratulations Siobhan! She was the first to correctly identify all the kids. Once again, Sean came up with the first three, but blew it on the last one. Sorry chief.
Moe, DO catch the Olive finale in "Little Miss Sunshine", a great moment in Kids rock!
<p)
If you ever open a daycare center, I will arrange to have kids just so I can send them there to listen to the soundtrack!

I'm with our men in Berlin and Dubai, respectively and respectfully. YOU rock MOE!
Let's hear it for the kids. And for Moe.
Love it... and "Love Jones" is a kitsch klassic!!
Rock-o-liciously enchanting!
This could be a chart topper if re-released.
