Comment:

There have been a couple of compilations of 60s era Spector soundalikes, but I have yet to see one solely focusing on the variety of 70s songs featuring one of more Spector trademarks. So here is a mix gathering a couple of my personal favourites... Some notes on a few of the songs might be in order:
Bruce Springsteen was/is of course a huge fan of Spector's Wall of Sound and even played guitar on a Spector session for Dion during the 70s. Allegedly, when Spector had heard Springsteen's take on his approach, he later told him "if you were gonna copy my sound, why didn't you just ask me to do it?" Springsteen's E Street band by the way provided the backing for Ronnie Spector's incredible 'Say Goodbye to Hollywood' which was penned by Billy Joel, who besides recording his own Spectoresque version also sang 'Until the Night' in a majestic style akin to what Phil did with the Righteous Brothers. Hmmm, what else? Oh, then there's Britain's foremost Spector clone Roy Wood whose records can be so downright Wall of Soundish it's scary! The 'power pop goes grandiose' selections from the Rubinoos and the Paley Brothers are also fantastic wall of soundalikes - the Paley Brothers are told to have been recording with Phil during the 70s but nothing's been issued.I could go on and on, but hopefully the track selections speak for themselves by emphasizing the far reaching influence of Mr. Spector - from ABBA to Patti Smith and even all the way to Denmark, where local band Gasolin' issued the Spectoresque 'Kvinde Min'. The final track makes for a befitting end. It's from Ronnie Spector's 81 'Siren' album - give it a listen all the way through. There's a couple of nice surprises at the ending of the song. Keep those glockenspiels a-ringin' and those 500-member choirs a-singin'. Back to mono and over and out!

Now this is one cool project. Way to go kwan. Bring on the wall of sound!

Do you know what Phil is up to these days? I did notice him credited for production on an album by Starsailor.

He's not up to anything I'm afraid. The Starsailor production work(which apparently didn't go too well although 'Silence is Easy' is a great track) was actually his first released work in over 20 years!

I have to admit being influenced by Spector. That is where I came up the "DJ Karen's Web of Sound" which is featured on my collabo-mix with musicgnome: SCANDALOUS
BEHAVIO(U)R Pts 1& 2. Okay, I'll be honest. The "Web of Sound" can only be heard on Pt.1 as I abandoned the idea and would still be working on it now. Oh well. Future recordings with this audio technique will be labeled "Trailer Park Closed-Circuit Audio". Cool mix of your faves, eh? Great taste in music. Keep up the good work!!!

Spector reminds me of that Slacker quote "every great mind throughout history has been considered an asshole by the general populace...Nietzsche...Dylan"
