Comment:

Saw the Mike Love & Bruce Johnston fronted Beach Boys play the capital last night. They did put on a good show although their performance proved too much of a Beach Boys jukebox for my taste, blasting out seven songs in one entire medley for the first twenty minutes!!! Mike and Bruce look as if they could die on stage any minute these days but they can still harmonize beautifully along with their young Al/Brian/Carl/Dennis stand-ins. After I returned home I felt an urge to focus on the other side of the group's legacy - all the album tracks, alternative versions and one offs that should be taken into consideration when assesing the artistic value of the group's work and achievements. So these are my favourite non-hits, along with a few guilty pleasures from the 80s & 90s.

At a pre-show gathering for fans I managed to get a grumpy Bruce Johnston to sign my copy of the 'Friends' album. Upon leaving us he uttered the following question: "Any more questions before I die?" I guess touring with the Beach Boys non stop and meeting obsessed fans can get on anyone's nerves. ;-D

Very nice. These guys play around New England every summer, but I haven't even been tempted to spend a nickle on a ticket, as I'm afraid that, without the Wilson clan (yes, I know Bruce is a cousin), it would be akin to going to see Andre Rieu in order to hear Strauss. Alas, the halcyon days of Brian and the boys are gone. But if you really enjoy the harmonies, check out my Briorian Chants mix. I'd be happy to upload a copy for you if you wish.
