Comment:
About six or seven years ago I was in a CD shop with Rob C and he handed me a copy of "Protein Source of the Future .... Now" by the Mountain Goats and told me I needed to buy it. It was unlike anything else I had been listening to and, though it took me a few listens, I soon became a big fan.About a year later I moved to the middle of Iowa. A few months later I happened to be listening to the local NPR station and heard them announce a Mountain Goats show in near-by Ames a couple days later. As it turns out John Darnielle was living in Ames and played at a great little club there about every 6 months. I was in all my glory. I turned a few friends onto him and then, after about 2 1/2 years, at one of the shows, John announced that he was moning to North Carolina. That was two years ago and this mix is in celebration of the first Mountain Goats show back in Ames since he moved.
This is a pretty even mix of his lo-fi whirring tape recorder motor recordings and his more produced works. Alot of the choices revolved around highlights from shows I;ve seen. Last tracks cut: Pink and Blue, Pale Green Things, Stars Fall on Alabama, This Year, Third Snow Song, Pure Honey and Cotton. Title is from track 2.

Feedback:
This is very similar to what I would put together Mark, well as similar as you can get with rich pickings like Johns. Truly a genius captured damn well.
A really great example of a SA mix right here, Mark, with well-considered choices - and there is a lot to choose from. I like the sentiments behind your liner notes too.
I immediately thought of Rob once I saw the artist.
Great notes, I need to hear this one!
So Mark, what's the first Mountain Goats' cd to get? Or I'll trade ya one for this. I have never heard them.
John Darnielle is the greatest songwriter who has ever graced popular music and this is a fitting tribute. Stellar work. Obviously we could quibble over some specifics (no "New Star Song"?!?), but I'm really, really happy to see the seriously underappreciated "Song for Dennis Brown" here.
A band I've gotten into in a big way over the last few months. This looks like the perfect introduction Mark.
My quibble: no "Cubs in Five"? Nah, no big deal. Just wanted to add my fave. I haven't much to add after the other comments, but I wanted to at least voice my support of anything involving the Mountain Goats. Not that your efforts to compile these specific songs isn't top quality in itself, but probably any Single Artist John Darnielle mix would deserve a full salute. Tons of superb selections, though :)
I keep hearing really good things about this band. This mix will be very helpful, as I will know where to begin. Thanks!
Uplink uplink please.
