Comment:
A tribute to Guitar Slinger Ryland Peter Cooder. Earlier this year I received from our illustrious desert dweller, Gobi, a bonus disc in a trade, a Ry Cooder Best Of Mix. I was familiar with Ry's work on Buena Vista Social Club, Zevon's final project and the Rising Sons but had never read much about him or listened to his solo work. After buying some more of his discs and reading up on him I was amazed at the vast and varied output he has created over the last 40 years. This mix is about 1/2 culled from Gobi's mix and filled in with my recent discoveries. Even though Ry is of the "Song over the Solo" school of guitar playing, I decided to focus on his string work. He is variously credited on these tracks as being on 6 String, 12 String, Electric Guitar, Tres, Electric Bass, Slide Guitar, Mbira, Oud, Bolon, Floor Slide, Cumbus, Mandolin and Bottleneck Guitar (as well as Vibes, Vocals, Electric Piano, Percussion and Producer).
This mix seemed to flow really well chronologically. Please note that although the Rising Sons album was released in '66 it was actually recorded in '64, when Ry was 17 years old. In addition to the guest spots included here, Ry has also recorded with Paul Revere and the Raiders, Taj Mahal, the Monkees, Arlo Guthrie, Phil Ochs, Gordon Lightfoot, Randy Newman, Neil Young, Rita Coolidge, the Doobie Brothers, Aaron Neville, Nancy Sinatra, Ibrahim Ferrer, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, John Hiatt and John Lee Hooker, among others.
Thanks again to Gobi for opening up my ears.

Feedback:
Years ago I attempted a mix of Ry's session, solo and soundtrack work and found it impossible to narrow down my favorites to one disc. Somehow, you've managed to do just that, excellent work.
I've got that Gobi mix & a blinder it is too, this certainly looks equally as good.
Love this!
I'm dying to hear this, Mark. Hook me up ASAP, please...
Wow - this is a really nice tribute. Great job!
you've done it again mark. this is a mix i have comtemplated making but never quite seem to know where to begin. i've always thought you could make a ry mix and someone unfamilar with mister cooder would not be able to tell that it was the same artist. he has such great range and you've done a super job showing it off. i guess i can scratch this one off my idea list. thanks!
Nice tribute. I'm a fan of his session work.
You're on a roll! Looks fantastic!
Ry was also responsible for the soundtrack to Crossroads, not the silly thing with Britney, but the interesting Ralph "Karate Kid" Macchio and Joe Seneca. If you've not heard it, take the time and find it, the whole disc is superb. Sadly, the blistering "head cutting" duel (featuring Steve Vai vs Ry btw) is not included, but most online download sites have it.
Impressive range.
GREAT tribute!!!
Interesting!
Excellent. Ry Cooder certainly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Clapton, Lee Hooker etc
This is really cool. I was aware that Ry Cooder had worked with several other artists, but I didn't realize what a great range of work he had done.
This is just fantastic. Ry Cooder's one of my favourite guitarists and it's great that this is such a varied tribute to what he's done. The Drume Negrita cut with Galban is also one of my faves; glad to see it here.
VG There is a Nick Lowe connection you missed. But perhaps that is even one the Basher got wrong. Nice.
Of course I am going to love this. Thanks for the nod. I can feel some more Ry investigations coming on . . . and I wish I had thought of selecting chronologically (how did I miss that one!!)
