Comment:
I made this mix for a friend and fellow XTC fan after discovering that he was unfamiliar with many of the bands that were influenced by them - or just plain ripped them off. Any excuse to make a mix, right? My original intention was to alternate XTC tracks with the soundalikes, but I scrapped that idea after I ended up with an overabundance of the latter - and I still didn't have room for them all. The sequence of the songs also reflects their evolution from herky-jerky new wavers to Beatlesque power poppers to the studio-bound perfectionists of today (The last song, "Where Did the Ordinary People Go?" was released late last year). XTC's impact varies: Jellyfish's Roger Manning, when auditioning guitarists for the band, only contacted people who referenced XTC in their classified ads. On the other hand, the lead singer for Dogs Die in Hot Cars claims he had never heard XTC until after he started hearing comparisons from fans and critics. I find this very hard to believe, as he's Andy Partridge's long lost vocal twin. The Dukes of Stratosphear sound so much like XTC that some people foolishly assume they're the same band. Many thanks to Mr. Mohr for the DDIHC and Valis for the Nines (performing a song co-written by Andy Partridge) and the animated cover. Up for a quiz, kids? Dave Gregory plays on three tracks found here. Be the first to name them and you'll score a copy at no cost.
Feedback:
Great idea for a mix, love the inclusions like the Minders, the Futureheads and Field Music.
"some people foolishly assume they're the same band" - ha, ha, you rock, Moe. But where is Mandy Moore's cover of "Senses Working Overtime"?
Well done.
Well done.
This is absolutely spot on. You have done a fantastic job with this mix.
I have been an XTC fan for, what, it must be 20 years at least. This mix -- and the artists and songs you selected -- does the band proud.

Great stuff! Love The Minders and Field Music cuts.
XTC rule.
Very, very nice. Like the direction you took this...far away more revelatory imho. And, you're cover keeps winkin' at me!

Congratulations joey! You're the winner. You know your XTCs, next time won't you sing with me?
This looks like an awesome mix. XTC has been one of my favorite bands for well... seems like forever.
Well, I've been an XTC fan since 1962 so I think I beat everyone else :) I'm also baffled 'Dogs Die' hadn't heard any XTC until they released their record. The similarities between the two are certainly very similar. Great looking mix, lots I don't know, but the first 8 kick ass..
This looks very cool, Moe, although, to be honest with you, I'd have a hard time separating a band being influenced by XTC from a band influenced by the Beatles, Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, etc.
Big LARGE bonus points for including The Blue Up? I thought I was the only person on earth who knew about them.
don't know much XTC, but I like what I've heard. the animated artwork takes the cake.
This is POP!BTW, how do you print out animated GIFs?
My least favorite drug and my least favorite band. I'd better hit the back button quick. But..... I can't stop staring at that cover. Help!
A great band, and this looks like a great tribute. (Never thought of the Owsley song that way, but you're right.)
In my Top 3 drugs and in my Top 100 bands..! (Yes, I'm interested in how many permutations you get trying to print this cover!)
Brilliantly stacked together Ion, when you built it did you watch over the men who fell..? Can't believe people are fallin' for the Dukes of hoax....

This may well be that "Brit-Boy Rock" I'm accused of spreading willy nilly. Then again it may be brilliant. It has a relatively "star-studded" cast and a good sound base as its inspiration. It lacks upper case letters -- this fact alone should preclude any comment from me, but Saaf needs help -- just print it simultaneously on three printers (ensure that they are connected by USB, parallel won't work). So that's that sorted then. In reference to the drug - yawn.
What's Orchid on? All this & 2 bands fom me home town too Xtremely good.
Ooh. Interesting AND colourful. Smooth like Kojak's head.
know very little here but an original concept using XTC...and by god that's a terific image.
Xcellent Tunage, Comrade. I guess I'd like a copy some time. PS: Now that makes us three wise men knwoing about the Blue Up?, queens of the late-90s cut-out bin. Blasting ecstasy.
Very sad I missed this one. The cover is one of the greatest I have seen. And I have another suggestion that Actually Really Needed To Be Included: anything from Bill Nelson's Red Noise. That album (also produced by John Leckie) is an almost carbon copied bookend to White Noise. Maybe it has something to do with Leckie's production, maybe it was stolen from the band......who knows...probably from the band as they weren't well known at the time....but there you go.
