1971
Comment:
1971... The Vietnam War was still going on, the US invaded Laos, and the movies gave us Shaft and Dirty Harry cleaning things up vigilante style . . . "do you feel lucky punk?".American kids of 1971 were busy learning how to enunciate correctly from the Electric Company while shovelling spoonfuls of Count Chocula and Cocoa Pebbles
cereal into their mouths. Meanwhile, the teenagers of 1971 were getting busy in their Ford Pinto's as Led Zeppelin played Stairway To Heaven.Jim Morrison dies in Paris at age 27. (July 3).
The Allman Brothers' Duane Allman dies in a motorcycle accident at age 24. (Oct. 29). The Big films of the Year were 'A Clockwork Orange' & 'The French Connection'.
But all 1971 really wanted to do was to buy the world a Coke and keep it company - right on!
This one's for our good friend Rob Conroy, and also French Connection's better half, Helen.. Click & enjoy.

Don't wish to appear parochial or overly "sensitive", but what happened to news from the world outside the USA in 1971?What a fabulous year for a mix though. I believe this is the best "Wonder Years" yet. Yeah baby! It's the real thing...
This is frickin' GREAT. Super-nice picks, including three of my all-time favorite songs ("Surf's Up," "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "River"), plus other tremendously cool picks by the VU, Al Green, Gil, the Who, Paul McCartney (actually, that song should be credited to "Paul & Linda McCartney," as Wings did not yet exist), Stevie Wonder, Nilsson and Carole King.
Oh, I also forgot to mention the fantastic Marvin Gaye tune and the fine John Kongos track...
Fixed Rob. That's Sammy's fault. He knows nuffink.
Cool. Glad to see McCartney's Ram get some recognition. Personal favorites from '71 omitted: Bowie's Hunky Dory, Genesis' Nursery Cryme, Pink Floyd's Meddle. Also, I thought VU's Loaded was 1970.
this looks absolutely fantastic. that's one of my very favorite marvin gaye songs, classics all around from the who, led zep, the beach boys, stevie wonder, al green, & what a wonderful harry nilsson track. that's my all-time favorite VU song (along with "oh! sweet nuthin'"), but i'm pretty sure it came out in 1970 - that's when loaded was released (which i'm listened to right now, by the way). rob must be reelin' with this one.
I didn't check the fine print re: research on the VU - Loaded. According to my Rock discography book sitting on my lap, Loaded was released Aug 1970, but didn't make the UK until April '71. The single who loves the Sun was released January '71 on both sides of the atlantic. Hunky Dory was very much considered but Bowie will have his day in '72 & '77. He already made '75... Fearless almost made the cut from 'Meddle'....SG
An absolute killer year, with Deep Purple touring to promote Fireball (of course I attended!), and James Gang doing the rounds to play cuts from Thirds. A nice Moody Blues from that year too. Savoy Brown could have been included as well. And speaking of killer, Alice Cooper as well. Just killer!
lubbly jubbly - my fave Led Zep track!
another year of great tracks, mu fav here is 2,3,4,7,9,10,14,16,17,19,20 and 22 well that's nearly them all
Great series, I was a junior in high school that year and this hits close to home.
Quite apt that Mrs Frenchy was born in the year that 'French Connection' was released! & she would say,' Great to see Cat Stevens & Al Green included here."
Can't thank you two enough for these "annuals." Was singing along to 1969 in the car just yesterday. Great stuff!. Keep going.
Great stuff. Expansive overview and Betty Wright has the most kickin' hair-do of all time.
Superb. Not a bad song here.
Monsters. Memories of Quisp & Quake.
this may be my favorite year yet. loved 2,3,5,15,18. #15 was on the 8-track that my folks got for free with their new Oldsmobile in 1976 so I heard it a million times. my friend Josh at work proclaimed that "Baba O'Riley" is one of his favorite songs ever made. wonderful.
Nice work here! 1971 means "Bruce Kison" to me.., and Nelson Briles, and Clemente...a load of tremendous songs here and I hope Saaf was a Quisp kid!
What a phenomenal year!! 1,3,4,6,12,14,17,20 are all-time favs. Nice work.
I love the 70s! I was very little at the time, but I was old enough to appreciate Nilsson, Cat Stevens, Joni and Linda McCartney. Good times. Good times.
Most excellent! 7, 9, 10, 11, 17, 19, 20 ... all supreme
Really fantastic. This is such a good series, guys, and all your picks so far have been really well considered! I love that you've included Gordon Lightfoot on here, and I love the Cohen, Marvin Gaye and Harry Nilsson.
