Comment:
Although I have stated time and time again that putting together an 80 minute disc of Tom Waits tunes is a next to impossible task, spurred on by the recent excellent Waits mixes by Team Ashcraft (Hemizen and Mahdishain)and a request from a friend at work, I decided to give it a whirl.First off, this is not a greatest hits or favorites mix. Either of those efforts would take me at least 8 discs. I tried to match my audience, he's eight months away from retirement, very open-minded about music and already familiar with Waits. His favorite songwriter is Dylan and his favorite singer is Iris Dement. In addition, I tried to hit at least one of the following Waits styles: Classic Ballad, Spoken Word, Tin Pan Alley, Murder Ballad, Junkyard Stomp, Tongue-in-Cheek and Hoarse Screamer.
This mix leans a little strongly towards his landmark 80's trilogy (Swordfishtrombones, Raindogs and Frank's Wild Years), does not include anything from his Wilson Play Soundtracks, Movie Soundtracks, Tribute Albums, Benefits or any of the live stuff I have (Although the version of Ol'55 which opens is the guitar version from "Early Years 2".) The order is chronological which I think develops nicely.
A final cut list would be 3 pages long. Title is Tom's comment when informed that "Bone Machine" had just won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album.

Feedback:
although you would have to work really hard to create a tom waits mix that i wouldn't think was excellent i always find it interesting to see what songs make the cut. i'll listen to this why i wait for orphans.
i'm with mahdishain - it's pretty much impossible to make a tom waits mix that isn't fabulous in some sense; but on the other side of the spectrum, it's also impossible to make the perfect tom waits mix cause he has so much great music & so many trademarks that will unfortunately not make the cut for length reasons. so we can bemoan the absences with any waits mix, or we can celebrate what's here. i'm for the latter. this is actually pretty excellent, a fine mix in tribute to a fine artist.
Excellent!
Fittingly superb Mark.
A pretty fine summary. You're right; too much to miss but lots of my personal favourites here.
And they said it couldn't be done... They reckoned without Petruccelli... Superb.
I think it turned out pretty great. Like Mahdishai/lombardi said, almost any attmept at a Waits mix is bound to be superb.
Hard to add to whats been said so I'll just say I like it.
really nice
Worth the Waits!
This is a great mix!!!!
This is a pretty great sampler, no matter what the intended audience. Nice work, Mark.
I agree with each and every comment. Hard to go wrong wit a Tom Waits mix..
