1984
Comment:
The year was 1984...The film Ghostbusters is released into theaters, becoming a summer blockbuster hit, with the song "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr. becoming a Top 40 hit.
Thirty-six of Britain and Ireland's top pop musicians gather in a Notting Hill studio to form Band Aid, and record the song "Do They Know It's Christmas", in order to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia.
On a Challenger mission, two astronauts become the first humans to fly free of a spacecraft.
And perhaps more significantly Barrydali's 5 year old brother threw his brand new remote control tank out of the window on Christmas day in a jealous rage because his own presents didn't match up. Unbelievably Band Aid have yet to write a song about that. If you're watching Stephen Maguire this ones for you...

Feedback:
This was a great year for music, despite revisionist history dictating otherwise. I only wish you'd included songs from Double Nickels on the Dime or Zen Arcade, my two favorite albums of that year. It's your mix, however, not mine, and it's a damned great one.
Both were on my shortlist Rob, and will turn up when we do our best of the rest double disc spanning 30 years, thats a promise.
the 19-21 run at the end is absolutely brilliant - love the tom waits, prince, REM...hell, the whole thing is great. another stellar installation - keep them coming.
Another boss trip in the wayback machine. Some absolute faves (Fall, Waits, Pogues)and others that I've learned to love over time (if you gotta have a Cyndi Lauper tune, that's the one).
A very fine year indeed as reported by you!
This was the year before my life changed irrevocably. I was not unhappy; indeed I was almost unaware of any problem... I remember a trip to the cinema -- The ABC, Deansgate I believe -- where pop promos where shown before the main feature. One such was "Perfect Skin". I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. I can say the same about this mix. That short chap with the regal name has churned out some cracking tunes; I am of the opinion that Track 6 may well be his finest.I really am enjoying this series. You fellows have tapped a rich vein. This mix is a fine example.
The year of my birth! Looks like it was a good year in spite of that - love the REM, Prince, and Bunnymen tracks. Don't actually mind that Lauper track and might even like it sometimes when no one's around. Good job on this flashback.
Very nice looking mix!
Oh you two are dangerous. This tunage is supurb... now I need to check 'em all out (I have been away for a spell...
Another great one in the series - unsurprisingly I'm very happy to see the Smiths included here, and I love the E&TB pick (who doesn't?!), the Pretenders, Replacements and Tom Waits. Excellent work as always, guys.
I thought it was a dire musical year at the time, other than Waits, but now looking at this, 4-8. 11. 17 and 19 are all excellent. Well done once again.
Excellent again. What a fantastic year.
You know, your 1984 is much better than the year I remember living through.
I'm just sayin'.
I'm just sayin'.
well, when I get my act together and do a 1984 mix, I'm pretty sure that 6,9,12,13, 17-20 will include, nice work
Fantastic mix from a great and formative year in my musical uprbringing. Good stuff, sir.
Well done yet again, kids. Smell that 1984-ness.
a great listen, guys. lots of stuff I liked back then: Cyndi Lauper (even when people were around, unfortunately) Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Prince, Go-Gos, Psychedelic Furs, Sheila E. - and things I discovered or learned to enjoy later on, ie. Prefab Sprout, R.E.M., Tom Waits, Pogues, Cocteau Twins, Pretenders, Smiths. I love this one.
