I need this mix to help me through until the new Norfolk & Western album finally sees its vinyl release at some point next month. While I have heard and am pretty fond of a few of the new songs, I thought it would be premature to put any of them on there (and 80 minutes were too short to do this band justice anyway - the decision which songs to include from Dusk in Cold Parlours and If You Were Born Overseas very nearly broke my heart), so the cut-off date for this mix was their last EP, A Gilded Age. On the other hand, I did include a few solo songs by Adam Selzer, mostly as an excuse to put "A Four Year Glance" on yet another mix CD. If I was even just a little bit less useless at making halfway decent digital recordings of stuff I have on vinyl, their cover version of Townes van Zandt's "Marie" and a different version of "Border Oklahoma" would be included, but alas...Feedback:
A single artist mix I thought I'd never see on here. Bravo Alex, only the ommision of Letters Opened in the Bar jumps out at me. Viva Selzer.
That's exactly why I said that picking songs from that album very nearly broke my heart, so rub it in Barry, why don't you ;)
Very cool, I was planning to make one myself sometime soon (and already in the process of selecting songs this very weekend!). I need to get those Hinah sessions again, and then I'll make this for myself, and then proceed to make a better one ;) I am planning on nearly solving the "Dusk" selection problem by simply including less songs from earlier records, because I think those are less good (esp. A Collection Of). Did you consciously go for a "retrospective" approach (i.e. include songs from all records, and if possible about the same amount of them for each record) or a straightforward best-of approach (i.e. include your favorite songs regardless of where they come from) for this? At any rate, this looks of course terrific.
While I am down with the idea of flooding this site with N&W mixes, what you are scheming here, my friend, is what I consider cheating. If I catch you ripping off a single one of my transitions and then claiming superiority for your own mix, you're in trouble! ;) Anyway, yeah, I went for what you called a "retrospective" approach, though for pretty much the same reasons that you want to pick more songs from the newer albums, and from "Dusk" in particular: Since "Dusk" and "If you were born overseas" are my favourites (in that order), I listen to them all the damn time anyway and therefore preferred to put some material on there that I usually don't listen to as much (the tracks from the Hush compilation, the unreleased solo songs from the hinah session, stuff from A Collection Of), but that I still think are pretty fantastic. So not so much out of a desire for representativeness, but rather in order to make myself listen to these songs a bit more.
Okay, that makes a lot of sense. And justifies my future posting of a non-retrospective mix!
