Not actually a tape, but rather a collection of mini-CDs (the 8 cm/3 inch kind). I've been toying with the idea of making sets of mixes in this format for a little while, partly because I think they're pretty, but mostly because my attention span in no way matches the length of my usual mixes - while I am as guilty as the next person of cramming as many songs as humanly possible on an 80 minute mix, I also tend to think that that's not very listener-friendly.As it happens, the idea of using this format matches another idea I've been harbouring for a while perfectly: that of making a mix where a song references another band or artist, followed up by a song by that band or artists referencing someone else, followed up by a song by that artist...you get the idea. I've thought about this quite a bit, but the best I could come up with was a row of maybe 7 or 8 songs - not much of a full-length mix. So instead, I've now split it up into seperate mini-mixes of 4 songs each. I certainly won't deny that this is more of a novelty-thing, so the flow works better on some of them and not so well on others, but for the most part, they work surprisingly well. They all clock in at somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes, so even people who suffer from the same kind of concentration deficits that I am struggling with can actually listen to them all the way through attentively! Also, did I mention they're pretty?
Volume 1, 3 and 5 follow the pattern outlined above, while volume 2 and 4 are in reverse order: first the band, then the song in which they're referenced. Since I'm not going for circular effects, the closers (of vol. 1, 3 and 5) and openers (of vol. 2 and 4) weren't chosen to contain any musical references, they're just, you know, great songs.

I was also going to chip in with a short attention span joke but I, erm.. Where was I? Wonderful theme and some great picks as well Alex. Btw, listening to the mix I received right now whilst biting my nails and drinking far too much beer. Hooray, it's a winner!
This looks great. I, for one, make it a point of pride to at least attempt to fill an 80-minute disc chock full of tunes in an order that challenges and entertains... whether or not I fail in others' eyes is their opinion, but I think I do a reasonably good job.
No doubt about it, Rob. It's not like my average mix is less than 79 minutes long either...I just felt like doing something different for once. The thing about my short attention span was true, though, unfortunately.
I have the same attention spam problem as you - I hardly ever manage to listen to a 80-minute mix CD in one sitting, and the mixes I make myself are often shorter for that very reason. Oh, I'm a bit tired of saying this by now, but this look fantastic.
