Comment:
110 minutes long. Released almost a month after Halloween, though Ministry would tell us that everyday is halloween, I've been working on this album since mid-September. Featured here is what I consider to be the greatest Halloween themed songs of all time. 31 to be exact, an obvious track total as Halloween falls on the 31st. While Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus is a great song, it was too long for this album. Bauhaus' Stigmata Martyr is just as haunting, especially with all the latin near the end of it. Not to mention the fact that it appeared in Night of the Demons (oh Angela). I've always loved The Munsters theme song, and the version here by Los Straitjackets is I think the best (taken from the great Halloween Hootenany cd) along with Halloween (She Get So Mean) a somewhat obscure Rob Zombie track, and the surf rock uber coolness of Banshee beach. Some might recall Pseudo Echo, an Australian band from the early 80's, their track His Eyes is featured here. Originally appearing in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning as nutty emo-Violet listens to it on her stereo system just as she is about to get slaughtered. Jason appears once more on this album in the form of Cooper's He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask). Taken from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. The final song on this album is the classic Gonk, featured at the end of Romero's Dawn of the Dead (and it's also the reworked theme of Robot Chicken), also the movies main theme Zombi by Goblin is here, tacked on with Kernkraft 400 taken from the Shaun of the Dead soundtrack. And what Halloween album could be complete without Bach's Toccata, played by the most recorded organist ever, Marie-Claire Alain. And off the top of my head, Frenzy by Hawkins appeared on the season 2 X-Files episode "Humbug". Bad Moon Rising in American Werewolf in London. The Blob is the main theme of the 1958 movie, penned by Burt Bacharach. Dead Man's Party is in Back to School. And (Don't Fear) The Reaper plays in the original Halloween while Laurie is toking up. Enjoy these gifts from the youtube gods. All these videos appear on this album in song form. (PSEUDO ECHO http://youtube.com/watch?v=gYkxZMg5_CY ) (MANSON http://youtube.com/watch?v=jU6iP0WLsU8 ) (OINGO http://youtube.com/watch?v=vk3w5wJyC78 )(ROCKWELL http://youtube.com/watch?v=-myr2X56n24 ) (COOPER http://youtube.com/watch?v=su-xRd-ty5E )Feedback:
I tend to shudder at anything deemed to be "definitive," but this sure seems to do the trick. Can I live without ever, ever, ever having to hear that Rockwell song again? Sure, but that's beside the point.
Kwel. And next year you'll do another 'top 'o the pops' definitive collection, I hope.
oh, awesome again. a nightmare on my street!? the mix gods bless you for adding that piece of musical history.
Nice variety to this. Good Screamin' Jay Hawkins pick.
Very cute, just like you!
