Comment:
Amy's Place is a groovy diner in the University Heights area of Main St. in Buffalo. They serve amazing Lebanese/American food with plenty of vegetarian choices, and their great music mixes make the most unbeatable dining soundtracks in town (or anywhere, perhaps). Sometimes customers contribute. My challenge was to use all of my recent acquisitions from the weekly used list at Paul's CDs -- the best little music store in Pittsburgh (or anywhere, perhaps) -- and make the diverse lot sound cohesive. Thanks to Rob C., my Paul's CD connection, for bidding on my CD requests, and for the pleasure of his company while eating Lentil-Berry Wraps. P.S. More thanks to Rob for suggesting that DK track as a final flourish, I'm glad I went with it. Also, I cheated a wee bit with the Rachid Taha selection, it's not from Paul's, but it fit so well I had to use it. If you wish, you can listen to side 1 at http://download.yousendit.com/0E7C46C9152100E3 and side 2 at http://download.yousendit.com/C87D6BAD42717E20.Feedback:
Okay, so I might be somewhat biased in my appraisal of this mix (I was privileged enough to be her sounding board while she was creating this mix but claim no credit for its actual contents), but I really think not. I can honestly say it's one of the most groovingly organic mix creations I've ever heard. The transitions throughout are incredibly smooth but never predictable, and Swank's choice of tunes is impeccable. I already worshipped the Jam, John Clae, Chris Bell, Pavement, Serge, Clash, Willie Bobo and Maytals picks (as well as thoroughly enjoying the Headcoatees track and the DKs' Elvis cover) prior to hearing the mix, but now am happy to add that Balkan Beat Box, Neko Case, Cut Chemist, Ray Baretto, Roy Ayers, Madlib, Rachid Taha and even the Captain Beyond songs to that list. Beg, borrow or steal anything to get a copy of this--it's more than worth your while.
Well, "Sufficiently Breathless" is one of the greatest songs ever, so that alone makes this worthwhile. I mean, geez, really, can anyone think of a better song? No. No, one cannot. Plus the Jam, Clash, Pavement, Maytals and Chris Bell tunes float my boat. I have to confess there's also a lot that's beyond my knowledge (or at least collection), but can't argue with the way you mix it all up.
P.S. I also forgot to add that fantastic Dizzee opener to the songs that I thoroughly enjoyed prior to this mix but now enjoy infinitely more.
Looks fab.
Looks great!
Looks killer, and I want to visit that store.
Yeah, this looks totally, totally fantastic. I dig it a whole lot.
Off the charts....goodness.
Well, Paul's is my favorite music store on the planet (which I will get to visit in approximately 2 weeks!) and this just look phenomenal. Already love the Jam, Cale, Neko, Boozoo, Clash and Maytals ... looking forward to hearing the rest.
Being from Pittsburgh myself, I can vouch for Rob in that Paul's is a pretty good place to pick up used CDs and you have also proven this with this fine mix.
Excellent mix. Had trouble with extracting Side 1, but side 2 is being listened to right now..
looks as yummy as a deluxe hommus platter. excited to listen; thanks for the links.
wot i kinow here i like so the rest is probably just as good.
Superb
Nods to this dining experience.
Swanky, suave & charming as all get-out.
Like sammyg, I couldn't get past the password-protection on side 1, but I've got my Willy Bobo ya ya neck bones from side 2, thank you so much . . .

This looks very eclectic & fun. I'm sure I'll be a regular passenger on the Swank Express.... I hope the diner car offers Lebanese fare!
good times aplenty. i do like that balkan beat box. and of course madlib is mad phat, yo.
Looks really wonderful - I look forward to hearing it. And Orchid is right - eclectic is the word here. Love the Neko Case and the positioning of that Dead Kennedys pick. Also, I love Lebanese food :)
Well, this mix almost makes me want to declare Paul's CDs as being my favourite music store anywhere ever too, in spite of the fact that I've never been anywhere near Pittsburgh in my life...excellent stuff. (The link for side A works now too, by the way - it was well worth downloading a second time.)
Yeah, that Captain Beyond track = harmonic bliss. The rest of the mix puts me a little closer to heaven as well. Love that Jam song.
brilliant, thanks again. side one favorites are Cut Chemist and Thee Headcoatees, and I really dig that patch from Slavic Soul Party to Rachid Taha on side two.
Thanks to all for the comments. Glad I could contribute to the site in a more direct way :)
Whoa! Both sides looks really good. Can't wait to give it a listen....
Besides being fantastically ear-catching, the inspiration for this one combines two of my favorite pastimes; making a diverse mix from a day's shopping and listening to said mix while feeding on some Middle Eastern chow.
Wow you got "The Garden" to work in a mix!! I'm still tryin to work that one....shame we had the cock up with MOTW or this would be a shoe in!!
Darn Part 1 seems to be corupt or is it just me??
Hmmm... missed this first time around so I'm glad Rob saw fit to put it back on the radar. It really is a very cool mix. BTW, I love the Margie Meal at Amy's Place which has been one of my favorite places to eat for years. I've been to Paul's in Pittsburgh too so the title of this mix really caught my attention.
Damn! I'm too late to get this one...looks like a well-deserved MOTW to me. I need to hear this!
Looks pretty, awesome. Keep on swankin' my dear.
Eclectically excellent stuff. I downloaded this when it was first posted and meant to comment earlier, as I've been listening a lot. Particularly liked the Slavic Soul Party through... well, the end, on side 2, and the Cut Chemist on side 1 is wonderful. Absolutely MotW! More!
This looks amazing, yup, and well deserved motw indeed... But y'know, I think on reflection, I prefer saint311's efforts...
