Comment:
Recently, when I came over to cook dinner with my mother, I brought in an Elmore James CD, because there's no better cooking music than blues classics. Halfway into the first song, she started making fun of my taste in music. Halfway into the third song, she said, "wow, that's actually really good". When the disc had finished playing, she pressed play again. At the end of the day, she asked if I could leave the CD with her for a day or two.A few weeks later, I quoted the song "Sein K÷pferl im Sand" (a very quotable song - well, for those of us who are able to decipher Viennese dialect, anyway - about political apathy) in conversation, only to hear my mother ask, "Since when are you quoting Georg Danzer lyrics?" - "Um, I'm not. Never. That's Arik Brauer."
So, I made her this mix. Essentially, it says: "Here's some music that I think you'll enjoy and that, by all means, you should have taught me about, not the other way round, dammit." I'm sure she knows some of it (though there's also a whole lot that I'm certain she really hasn't heard at all, or only because I played it for her), but in any case it includes nothing I ever heard while growing up or found her listening to since. It's all music that was released before she got married and had pesky kids that needed to be fed and all that, so 1979 was the cut-off date.
Title from the Sam Cooke song, covered by Otis Redding here.
Feedback:
I'd say you're an uppity youngster, trying to larn your mama some music, but a) any person (mother or no) who mocks Elmore James clearly needs some larnin' and b) this mix kicks ass.
If your Mum, bless her heart, was not listening to any of these excellent tunes, I cannot imagine what she WAS listening to. Well, I can, but I am unable to bring myself to truly contemplate it. I applaud you in your new role as parental musical saviour. Hang your head, Mum, but don't forget to tap your feet.
i love the premise of this: teaching our parents about the music we discovered before them; i did something similar for my mother a little bit back. either way, this is really, really good -- i love the nick drake, elvis costello, otis redding & big star songs above all, but there's not a wasted track here & each cut is stellar. thanks, mom
Yeah, this hits me where I live. Elmore James has nothing on you babe.
Love almost every single pick Alex, but the closing trio is perfection. I hope this leads to your maters enlightenment. It sure as hell should.
there is something to be said for pesky kids. nice job!
Lucky your mum! 7-9 is inspired, 11-13 dusts my broom, great to see Michael Chapman & finally couldn't agree more with Barry re the closing 3.
Wonderful, Just Wonderful. Lucky ma, I say.. Merry Xmas Alexandra
Beautiful. Should haunt your mother's ears for a long, long time!
Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing mix. Aside from the opener (which is just "okay" to me), I absolutely love every song here.
this looks amazing, i want a copy, bad.
