Comment:

Here's one to make myself look all culturally distinguished, or something. (I think "hopelessly geeky" was the word I was looking for.) It's a mix made up entirely of poems set to music (though sometimes with lyrical adaptions). Well, the bookends aren't set to music, strictly speaking - but, uh, they qualify on account of the fact that fugues and psalms are musical pieces? No wait, I am not going to get all defensive about my love for Paul Celan here. They're here because they're awesome, and because I have yet to hear a musical realisation of any of Celan's poems that would do the man justice. I don't have a clue how this sounds to you non-German speakers out there, of course, but if it means nothing to you, I trust that you'll know how to fast forward the first few minutes. In any case, you can give this a listen here if you want to.

Title taken from the English translation (as printed in the booklet of the De Kift album 7) of the poem "Yes, it's done..." by Sergey Yesenin, of which De Kift do a rendition in Dutch on track 5.

PS: If the translation of the Rilke's Stundenbuch that Mehldau and Fleming are using is the best one there is, then I do feel sorry for those of you that don't speak German.

Thumbs up.

Thomas - Hui. -h ja, wie war das noch mal mit meinem Vorsatz, "I am not going to get all defensive about my love for Paul Celan here"? Ha.

This looks great. And Paul Celan reading! I don't know who could match him musically. Such austerity. It would have to be like a solo cello or something. I don't think R Kelly could do it, anyway.

There once was a guy who drank bourbon, and listened to music sans turban. When he came upon a mix, of poems with licks, he nodded zehr gut 'cause that's all of his German.

Alex - Killer idea for a mix! It's a literary achievement like we haven't seen 'round here before. Outstanding work (in spite of what Thomas says, ha, ha).
(What did Thomas say?)

Here's a poem while your hand heals:

Werther had a love for Charlotte
Such as words could never utter;
Would you know how first he met her?
She was cutting bread and butter.

Charlotte was a married lady,
And a moral man was Werther,
And for all the wealth of Indies
Would do nothing for to hurt her.
So he sigh'd and pin'd and ogled,
And his passion boil'd and bubbled,
Till he blew his silly brains out,
And no more was by it troubled.
Charlotte, having seen his body
Borne before her on a shutter,
Like a well-conducted person,
Went on cutting bread and butter.

This looks very, very nice. Top marks. (As an aside, and if you're interested, the folk singer Greg Brown did an album called Songs Of Innocence And Of Experience, putting music to the poems of William Blake. I'd be more than willing to forward the album if you haven't heard it. Perhaps in a trade for the above?)

Roses are red, violets are blue, your love of Celan is up to you. Whilst I have to admit I'm ignorant regaeding Celan, I can at least appreciate the effort expended in creating this mix, bravo mon ami.

Of course track 15 is based on one of the finest poems ever written. Opinions, eh? It's so annoying that everyone seems to have them.. I too "feel sorry for those" that don't speak German, and I'm one of them. This is a tremendous idea, beautifully realised.

congratulations! while listening to your mix for the second time this morning, I logged on to AotM because I was compelled to select it as mix of the week if a new one hadn't yet been chosen. (great choice, Mixxer!) what you've done here is unusual, gorgeous, atmospheric, original and terrific. the Činna and Waits tracks and the 11 to 17 stretch are especially nice. if we're lucky, hopeless geeks will one day rule the world.
