Comment:

(2) CD Mix of tunes about Boxers and Boxing. I've been thinking about this theme for awhile and stumbled onto "Joe Lewis Blues" (misspelled though it was) on a Public Domain MP3 sight yesterday and decided to get at it.
A couple brief explanations; the Leadbelly song tells the story of Black Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson being refused passage on the ill-fated ship. The Otis Houston Jr. track is about Sugar Ray Leonard, the Ewan MacColl track is about Sugar Ray Robinson (as I assume is the Miles Davis song.) The Miles, Conti, Yankovic and Lee "Scratch" Perry tunes are instrumentals. The Trama song is a bit of a stretch because he only talks about bring from the same neighborhood as Hagler. The Cuffs tune is from the "Boycott Radical Records" sampler and is listed everywhere as "Various Artists", it took some digging to find out who recorded it. Cassius Clay was not a bad singer. I was not surprised about how many songs there were about Ali, I was a little surprised about how many songs there were about Liston.

very clever idea, mark! love the miles davis, public enemy & bob dylan tracks in particular, though disc 2 itself looks to be a real treat all around. i'm no fan of boxing, but believe it or not my girlfriend's father used to be a boxer. i'm sure he'd love to give this a spin...

Now this is my kinda mix: interesting & unusual theme, excellent & varied choices & fine illo to boot (or punch). Definitely a MOTW contender.

On "Spar" with the best mixes out there!!! Hah...Hah...Ho-My, that is quite bad. This looks like a fantastic mix. Interesting to see (and extra bonus points) that you used Sugar Ray, rather than a Tribute to Jack Johnson, by Davis (a pugilist, himself). But, I am saddened to note the absence of the quintessential boxing song, "Mama Said Knock You Out" by James Todd Smith (a.k.a. LL Cool J) ;) jk

This is a GREAT theme mix! I did immediately think of the BFF track so it's nice to see it there, but there are so many gems alongside that one. Cool Public Enemy -> Faithless section. And, taught me a lot about boxing!
