Let's Meet Mulligan
Comment:
As a former Bari Sax player I developed a fondness for Gerry Mulligan at about age 15. I first learned to improvise by transposing his solo on "My Funny Valentine" and then horsing around with it. About 18 years later I was "between successes", looking for a job and living with my younger brother in rural North Central Pennsylvania. While driving the thirty miles necessary to buy a real newspaper, I happened across a college radio station from upstate New York playing a Jazz show. The station was fading in and out and they played a tune that was unmistakeably Gerry on a duet with another familiar horn player I couldn't readily recognize. I pulled over at a spot where the station came in a little clearer and found out that it was Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan from an album called "Getz Meets Mulligan in Hi-Fi"That was my first exposure to the "Mulligan Meets ..." series which has become one of my favorite Jazz series. In the 13 years since I have picked up most of the rest of the series as it was reissued. The following mix is a cut from each of the discs (running time 1 hour.) Cover art is all players featured. Feedback:
Great stuff, especially 2-6.
Listening now and this is quite good. Thanks for sharing your memories and the zip file.
This looks tremendous, Mark--just as I thought it would when you told me about it last week.

an acquired taste, tastefully done!
This is really great. A real all-star lineup. And thanks for the link. I'll have to start pulling the CDs out of the library to se what othr gems are hidden on them.
was looking for the right thing to put on this morning when I got to work, feeling kinda blue and gray. (as in cloudy and sad, not as in the US Civil War.) this was perfect, thanks for the download link. especially liked the track with Astor Piazzolla.
