Comment:
The accompanying mix CD to a book that my brother and I bought as a birthday present for my father, a collection of short crime stories taking place in the garden combined with gardening tips (yeah, yeah, he's difficult to find presents for). I toyed with the idea of making a mix containing songs about murder and gardening myself, but dismissed it quickly because I just didn't have the time - but then my brother called to suggest the very same thing, so I figured what the hell. We ended up agreeing to make not a full-length 80min mix CD, but one of those mini-CDs that contain 24 minutes of music. Two songs are about gardening (I was originally going to use "The Family Gardener" by The Minus 5 instead of the Costello track, which would have been a little bit less tenuous, but also a whole lot less good), two are murder stories, and two combine the two topics (for the record, the title of the Reinhard Mey song translates as "The murderer is always the gardener"). I'm not entirely sure who contributed what here - we definitely both came up with the Reinhard Mey track independently, I think the same is true of Sodastream, the Costello and Dylan picks were my brother's suggestions, and I suggested the R.E.M. and Greg Brown songs (but I have Mr. Averageson to thank for the latter). Not the best mix ever or anything, but I think he's going to enjoy this one. Cover amended from the book of the same name by my brother.
Feedback:
This is very clever and cool.
Cap doffed in admiration!
A bloody dagger and a caption "mit sch÷nen Liedern" - I am sure he appreciated the incongruity.
short & sweet -- i like it! love the dylan, costello & r.e.m. tracks alot...
What a lucky Dad. Great prezzie. Fine mix..
voll schlau und cool!
Very good. I like the artwork. It's a challenging concept and I wonder how much further you could take it...
I think it should be possible to fill an 80-minute mix on this theme while maintaining the balance between the gardening and the murdering themes, althought it'd probably mean stretching the definition of "song about gardening" a little. An 80 minute mix about this theme that my father would still enjoy? I don't think I could do that. That's why I like those mini-CDs so much, pretty much!
Not familar with the opener but the rest is great.
This looks rather lovely.
