Comment:

"Hey, hear about him?"

"Who, Crazy Mike?"

"Yeah. He enlisted. Shipping off next month."

"Heh, well, I guess he's quiet enough to survive don't ask don't tell."

"What, he's gay?"

"Oh yeah, you can tell, total closet case. The guilt, the self-hatred, the whole nine yards."

"No, that's not true..."

"Well, I've heard it from numerous credible sources that-"

"No, I mean, he's not in the closet. Carrie heard from Dominic-"

"Flaming Dominic?"

"Yeah. He told Carrie that he had asked Mike - less than subtly - and Mike had admitted it without hesitation. Even nonchalantly, according to him."

"Oh, well, he must be one of those ex-gays in training. He's a total bible thumper in my comparative religions class. Probably praying the gay away as we speak."

"Negative. Apparently, that was Dom's first thought as well, and Mike responded pretty clearly to the contrary. That he'd never take a male lover, but would also never desire a female lover."

"Wow, pretty dark for Mr. Smiles."

"Except that he was smiling. And then he came to the strangest conclusion, something like 'God will provide me with a lover'."

"That doesn't make sense."

"I know."

"Eh, well he's probably on the down-low with Dom. Hypocrites and religion go together like rum and coke."

"I hate rum and coke."

"Don't think so. If he was hiding something like that, wouldn't he shy away from people like Dom and Jon and-"

"Jon? Angry Jon? Seriously, they were hanging out?"

"Whatch'all talking about?"

"Crazy Mike and his celibate gay lifestyle."

"Oh, don't get me started on that moron."

"Why, what happened?"

"Well, you know Shane? He had a big crush on Mike, and Mike actually admitted the same to him. But...no dice. Religious reasons, of course. Shane's still in a social coma over it. I went up to him and ranted for a while about how they'd be the perfect couple. I thought I had him with this one argument - I told him that he could keep Shane away from the meth and those reckless one-nighters - he could do that - and that no ethical god would disapprove of such a moral anchor.

"Good one. But he disagreed."

"No, that's just it, not a word of disagreement. He only looked at me straight in the eyes and gave me the most infuriating response-"

"Oh, oh, let me guess: 'God will provide him with an anchor'."

"Huh, yeah. Word for word."

"Christ. I just don't get this guy."

"Nobody does."

How can anyone hate Rum & Coke? 1-4 and 15-19 work especially well for me.

Very intrigued by the notes - so personal and yet to a reader like me, obscure...
