Comment:
A co-worker came to me (being the resident music junkie) asking, "What's that song that goes "Hallelujah ... Hallelujah"? I, of course, could not stop with a simple explanation or a single version of the song and this mix was the result.Ths first seven tracks are versions of the Leonard Cohen song. I go back and forth between the Buckley and Wainwright versions as to which is my favorite but the original Cohen version is really starting to grow on me too. The Allison Crowe cover was downloaded after misreading it as Allison Crouse but it's actually quite good. The Willie Nelson and Popa Chubby versions were also pleasant surprises and I've always liked k.d.'s take on it. I was surprised that playing all seven in a row does not tire me of the tune.
As for the non-Cohen penned tunes, the Martin Sexton, Nick Cave and Ryan Adams tunes are all big favs and the Ray tune is an all-time classic. I saw the Roches do "The Hallelujah Chorus" on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert in the mid-70's and it is the tune that sold me on them (their new disc is worth a listen.) The Maytals/Cracker/Fall-Out Boy/Nadas tracks are really there for contrast and the Mannheim Steamroller was put in half in jest but it ties things up nicely.
I may re-think this further down the road and do a disc of Cohen covers and a disc of non-Cohens because this was put together in an evening and I know I've just scratched the surface. (I couldn't put my hands on the John Cale version, which is the one glaring omission.)
Feedback:
Maybe proving you can never have too much of a good thing? I think the Rufus version just edges it for me, but it's close. Should you ever extend, Mad Mancs the Happy Mondays recorded an entirely different 'Hallelujah'...
Nice one Mark, though I don't think I could cope with listening to the lot in one hit!
I made a one song mix before and it was fun to make but tortorious to listen to.
I'll vote for Rufus and I'll vote for this being a well compiled piece.
'llelujah for this.
i actually briefly contemplated making this mix recently, before putting the idea to rest rather quickly. even so, jeff buckley's version always does it for me (definitely the definitive version in my book), although rufus's & the original come in very close behind. absolutely love that ryan adams tune, & the ray charles too -- though i could do without ever hearing fall out boy's name (nevermind their "music") ever mentioned within my vicinity again...
i love it. friday night consisted of me and my best friend and his lady in the car talking drunkenly about our love for the current song on the deck, the jeff buckley version.
Fabuloso! If AOTM Exhibits were functioning, this would go right into "Never Too Much of a Good Thing."
Rather jolly splendid and downright spiffing! Oh yes, that John Cale omission is "glaring"; but hey, you knew that...
single song mixes are challenging. you picked a strong song to work with.
Superior!
Wonderful. The John Cale version trumps all others for me.
praise the lord! this looks like an engaging enterprise... I'd love to hear the k.d. lang version.
looks like it was a fun evening putting this together and you'll have even more fun updating it in the future (probably more fun than listening).for what it's worth, my vote goes firstly to Jeff Buckley and secondly to John Cale (although I am always a sucker for Leonard and Nick) . . . Rufus isn't a bad version either come to that . . . .
Rufus' version is my favorite by a landslide, although I really, really like the Cale version (about which I was going to ask 'til reading your comment--I can help with that), as well. (You know my feelings on Whitney Alterna-angst, although that's his best recorded moment by a landslide.) I really dig those Roches and Ray tracks, as well.
awesome mix, but where is bob dylans cover of the cohen classic?
My band covers this song as well - I wish we had a recording of it so I could send it to you, because I think we do a really great job with it...
Ditto Curtis. Excellent selections through out though.
I'm w/Curtis - the Cale version is #1 in my book - still, not a bad bit of selections for a quick night's work...
And am I the only one who can't stop thinking about Shrek?

you are twisted and sick... great traits for a mixer... ramen.
This is awesome.
The John Cale version is good, but Buckley's I think is the best... ever. The Cohen version never.really got to me. Oh, and just for having Ryan Adams on this you get a million bonus points. haha

ok ;)
The song's not his best, but is perhaps his most universal/coverable - speaking of which, please do a Cohen cover mix!
