Comment:

(I used to do this quite a lot. And then I didn't.)

I know a lot of people make CDs for friends to try and introduce them to a band they 'should' like or even to re-educate them about a particular style of music they don't 'get'. I've done that myself once or twice in the past.

For the last few months I've been sharing my flat with somebody who has a pathological aversion to any music from the 1960s (the result of being 'subjected' to endless compilations on long car journeys as a child apparently). This presented me with something of a dilema since my 60s CDs are amongst the most treasured part of my music collection. And so I created this CD...

...not for her, but for ME! Because when you know somebody with such fundamentally flawed tastes, you are better off listening to good music than trying to have a worthwhile conversation with them!

Looking back at the list of mixes I submitted in the past I noticed that several of the songs on this CD featured on some of my previous efforts. And on reflection I realise that those collections were largely excuses to put these same songs onto a CD - because these are the tracks that make those (and other compilations I've made) 'sparkle and shine' for me.

And so I've attempted to do something I find surprisingly hard - I've tried to construct a CD entirely of songs I LOVE - and not just things I think I 'should' love because they are 'great songs'. I think it was Nick Hornby who said that everybody has two 'first albums they bought' (the real one and the one they wish it had been). I rerecorded this CD about ten times gradually weeding out all the songs that I "should" love and replacing them with the songs which really connect with my heart or soul or whichever part it is which controls the love of music (it certainly isn't the brain which is why I find it so hard to second-guess my own tastes sometimes!) I then had to realise that some of those songs which I 'should' love... I actually DO - and so tracks like "Strawberry Fields" which I nearly left off for being too 'obvious' were reinstated.

And so these are the songs that made my final cut - a mixture of soul, psychedelia, R&B, folk-rock and pop all linked together by one common factor... they all have an extra 'something' that makes feel that bit better about life as soon as they start playing.

It's my life and I'll do what I want.

Interesting comments - I find myself making a lot of single artist mixes these days and I have to determine whether I'm putting that song on the mix because I want it there or because it "belongs" there. As for your mix - it looks
great!

One of the best mixes I have ever seen on this site. Admittedly '60s music is my favorite era. Your comments hit home to the heart of the matter of the essence of mix making. My choice for mix of the week. Welcome back to the site.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean - like I'd find it hard to do an Otis Redding CD without including "Dock Of The Bay" - even though there are about three CDs worth of Otis Redding songs I actually prefer! Whenever I go on holiday I take a pile of CDs with me that I think I'll want to listen to (you'd think I'D know that) - and yet invariably there will be a few that never get a listen while others become my 'constant travelling companions'. It's as though my brain chooses what to take with me but then my heart and soul then decide what my ears actually want to hear! As if to prove my point, while I was typing up the track-listing for this mix I started to have doubts about including the Jackie Wilson song (after all it's just simple soul tune with a nice groove) but when I just listened back to this mix it really lept out at me as soon as it started and confirmed its right to be included!

Thanks Hemizen - you posted that while I was replying to the previous message so now it looks like I'm saying I know exactly what you mean about it being one of the best mixes! It's good to be back.

I love 60s mixes more than any other type of mix, I think. These singles just lend themselves to this type of presentation. I suppose this has sentimental value for me because I was raised on all of this music. Especially that Tommy James song. You've done a really fabulous job with this.

Great mix and notes! It took me awhile to discover the brilliance of 60s music, but now it's my favorite era for pop. Lots of songs to love above: Pretty Things, Byrds, S&G, Greenwich... Oh, and welcome back!

One of the good things about digging through old out-of-date music is that the "should" of what's hip & what's not, or what's obvious & what's not, just doesn't apply anymore, so you're free to like whatever you like.
I do like this mix.

Lots on here to love.Despite doing most of my growing up years in the 70's it was 60's music I discovered first courtesy of the Beatles which compels me to say that Strawberry Fields is my favourite Beatles song.

I really enjoyed your comments. It sounds like an incredibly hard mix to make. It sounds simple in theory, but, I don't think I could do it ,frankly. There's just so much music and different feelings associated with each song, I think it would be damn near impossible just to try and find the few songs that I love absolutely. That said there are a number of my favorites on here as well. Nice work.

Thanks for all your feedback, guys. Yes, it was hard to make - if I hadn't limited myself to choosing songs from a five year period I'd have found it impossible. I actually started off trying to fit the whole decade onto one CD but I found that I was having to sacrifice some of these later songs for earlier ones I didn't feel as passionate about. One comment i can't let slip by without a comment in return: For me, 60s music will never be "out of date" - in fact I'd say these songs are less out-dated than pretty much anything from the 70s, 80s or 90s!

Like Ricky Nelson said, you can't please everyone, you might as well please yourself...or something like that

A little post-note to this mix...... Never underestimate the power of positivity.... and more importantly, never underestimate the power of positive music..... Before I recorded this CD I had been unemployed for about three months. I have listened to these songs over and over since I recorded it, re-establishing/rebuilding who "I" am in my own mind (and feeling as though my belief in beauty had been vindicated by the positive comments posted in response since I posted it on here) ...and today I went to an interview and was offered the job. This is NOT coincidence! Thanks.

great notes and a great mix. Congratulations on getting the job - I'm sure that it is not coincidence either.
