A Trail of Breadcrumbs
Comment:
A spur of the moment quickie mix that I have been planning for three months. About that time I decided I neede to build a mix around "The Great Gate of Kiev" from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. I downloaded a Brass Band version and a couple of Orchestral versions and settled on one by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. There was no way to open a mix with it or really to follow it so it needed to close the project. Why not start with the last tune and build the mix backwards to the beginning? There the idea sat until this evening when I decided to put it together. I had no direction in mind, in fact I chose not to think about any but the next (well, previous) track and simply try to find a song which led well into the current one. The result is below, it took about 2 hours to put together and it is (IMHO) one of the best I have submitted. The title describes the process. Link for the stoic.
Feedback:
I like the way you think, Sir!
Excellent mix all the way through.
Excellent mix all the way through.
great idea
good stuff.
this certainly is one of your best, that is not hyperbole - the lou reed, love, coltrane & doors tracks are my favorites
Chet Baker, The Doors, Love,Sam Phillips, John Coltrane, Tin Hat Trio, Traffic, Lou Reed, this is not breadcrumbs but a full-blown feast.
Tried this a few times Mark but couldnt nail it, you certainly have. Will be downloading not least to check out the closer that inspired it.
This looks amazing - can't wait to give it a listen. Love the opener...
Yeah, this is a great quickie mix and interesting process of working backwards.
This does look like one of the best mixes you've ever submitted. LOVE the Traffic (I've been on the verge of using that track for about a year now), 'Trane, Doors, Love, and Nick tracks.
Sometime quickies produce the best results and that certanly seems to be the case with this mix. I cannot wait to check it out.
Those first four tracks immediately caught my attention. Looks great, thanks for the download!
Amazing looking mix. Really keen on hearing that closer, along with 9 thru 11. Cheers for the DL, gonna listen now..
Pretty cool, Pet.
Worth the price of admission for the opener alone (or is it the closer, hmmm?). Really nice looking mix, and a great method to come about it.
Spookily I'm listening to 'Live & Let Live ' as I write, I once built a mix around the closer but as which one it was I cannae remember? Anyway enough of me, the snot has caked against my pants........ LOVE this mix!!!
"Pictures at an Exhibition" totally roxx.
Clever mix!
Clever mix!
ambitious - i like that!
Looks a winner and a great way around a roadblock...
I find (judging by own experiences and other people's mixes) that these
"spur-of-the-moment" type mixes always turn out fantastic! Too much thinking is what ruins mixes, I say. Fantastic mix.

Can't believe I missed this, Mark. Thanks for not putting the ELP version of Gate of Kiev...
FYI, my friend, I had every intention of naming this MotW when I returned from Niagara Falls. Fantastic work. It's rare that I listen to another's mix as often as I've listened to this one.
Love the process - and the result.
