Comment:

It doesn't feel like summer in most of the country at the moment (unless you live in Southern California), but that couldn't stop me from posting the latest edition of Pet Soundalikes. Actually this has been on the shelf since August, but my own laziness and the dysfunctional image feature on AOTM has delayed its appearance. This one includes less covers than previous editions, but it does feature a wonderful Beach Boys-esque version of the Pixies' "Elevate Me." Thanks to Sammy (G) the Sidewalk Surfer for the Figurines and Valis for his insightful tips. The quiz: Which song namechecks the city where the cover of Pet Sounds was photographed? The first person with the correct answer gets a copy -- and a little ray of sunshine.

Very nice, anything Pet Sounds related must be beautiful, though the Master is the only one I know here very well.

Love that Sparks track. Plenty here I don't know but I know it'll be lovely. Flummoxed on the quiz. Thanks for the mixes, they are amazingly excellent.

No I don't want a link thankyou very much.. Because I already have a copy!!! Hooray. Really great stuff, I just love summery poppy tunes like these. Don't want to pick out any favourites incase I offend the others. But ssh, don't tell anyone, but I think Malibus is my favourite of all...

Man, it's snowing as I type this... total opposite to the vibe of this mix. Ah well, I enjoy the escapism you provide, Ion! Anyway, I absolutely adore that P:ano track (as well as that entire album) and the closer is freaking awesome. Cool mix.

I'm in California, wishing for colder days, though, I tend to not care for them too much... Wanna trade places? ;] GREAT mix, btw! Especially: P:ano, Caribou, Architecture, & Panda Bear.

First time I heard the Chicago cut I thought it was The Beach Boys, and I like it and the mix. Good job

You're doing us all a favor by assembling all these great Beach Boy influences time and again. Truly bar-setting material, what little I know of it, and the rest looks delightfully promising (Sparks did a song in this vein?! I'm salivating). Can't wait for the next, but until then thanks for keeping us warm and merry! (even though I'm a San Diego fella myself)

I think that since you don't have a cable connection, we should organize some kind of swap. I'd love to sink my teeth into this whole series.

don't know many here, Moe, but "Covered Wagons" is a favorite, and would love to hear Matthew Taylor's cover.

These are always a delight, though I have to confess that each version delves deeper and deeper into unfamiliar territory (though, without knowing most of these songs, I don't know whether youre musical knowledge is growing ever broader, or your deinition of soundalike is becoming more expansive.
As with the esteemed Mr. Lally, I have to say that I include Chicago on the list of Bands Whom Dick Cheney Should Personally Waterboard (though, ok, maybe in the right mood some of their early tunes are redeemable).

Incidentally, if I may say so myself, my prior comment brings "shitty typing" to a whole new level.

Pet Sounds is my #4 all-time favorite album so keep the mixes coming. There are maybe five Chicago tracks I like and Wishing You Were Here is one of them.

P the Swede was the only one to take a crack at the quiz, and he came up with the correct answer. Good going dude! As for Pop Kulcher's comment, my definition of soundalike hasn't really changed since the series began. What keeps this series going is the constant discovery of new artists that embrace the Beach Boys sound. At least a third of these artist weren't around when I compiled the first Pet Soundalikes in 2002.

I hope this runs to 100, best series on the board by a distance. When i get back in the groove can we hook up for another trade? Box set maybe, I will happily pay the postage. Go Ion!

A great series continues... I went back and looked again at some of the older mixes in these series. A really wonderful collection and an inspiration to go check out lots of other bands.
