At the Beat of a City Drum
Comment:
A mix I made for my mother. I'd been meaning to make a mix for her birthday (coming up in a bit less than a month), but somehow that turned into two mixes, and one of them took a shape that seemed sufficient to consider it finished quite a bit in advance of the date, so I figured I might as well send it off now, on the occasion of her getting a new car radio (with CD player and all!) this weekend. I bet there'll be at least one or two tracks about which she'll tell me, quite reproachfully, "you know, I really didn't care for that one song". Ah well...Feedback:
always great to see you 'round these parts, alex - i'm sure this will fulfill its intended purposes gloriously - even if she "doesn't care" for all of the songs. we can't always please everyone, right? this comes pretty damn close though. love the nick drake, leonard cohen & andrew bird tracks especially...
Looks lovely. I particularly like the Sir Richard (!), Leonard, Jacques and Nick tracks.
Alex, it's been a while - glad to see you're back. And with a great one of course. Love 3,4,6,10,11. Looking forward to the rest.. especially that 14/15 combo. Now don't leave it so long next time...
The Nick Drake, Andrew Bird and Leonard Cohen jump out. Always good to expand Mom's horizons.
Good to see old Jacques Brel making an appearance.Looking forward to hearing this one. Thanks for sharing
casiotone for the painfully alone on a mix for mom! i only wish my own mother were so hip. this looks great.
Hey Alex it has been a while. Surely Mama will be tooling around town blasting this from the open windows.
What is track 9 about? Does anyone still use "payphones"?

track 9 is so motherly.
Ed, here's the complete lyrics to track 9 for you:
I waited up till it was light
don't they have payphones
wherever you were last night
you stumbled in & what a sight
all pale & puffy eyes
under the bathroom bright
a face to give a ghost a fright
don't they have payphones
wherever you were last night
The song was released in 2006, for the record.
I'm one of those old-fashioned people who usually do keep a phone card in their wallet (I also write with a fountain pen and like to blow my nose into a cloth handkerchief), but my general impression is that it's indeed increasingly difficult to find a functional payphone these days. I've indeed used one to call my mother a couple of times in the past two months, though.

If your mom even likes half of this she'd be one cool lady. Really digging that 6 to 10 stretch. I've been getting into Sir Richard Bishop a lot lately.
Lots of great picks here... she should love this.
Awesome, as always. The Wrens and Andrew Bird are too absolute faves of mine (amongst the multitude of fine selections, mind you). Always a treat to be able to upload a mix of yours for full immersion while at work. A blessing, in fact.
OK thanks. Casiotone for the PA were possibly influenced by Reba McEntire, 1994:
Back in 1876 an ol' boy named Bell
Invented a contraption that we know so well
By the 1950's they were in everybody's home
That crazy little thing they call a telephone
Now there's one on every corner, in the back of every bar
You can get one in your briefcase, on a plane or in your car
So tell me why, haven't I, heard from you?

Looks like good taste runs in the family. Lots of lovely selections that your mother should know.
Well I don't know about your mom, but I see lots to love on this one.
The triumphant return of Alex is upon us. Rejoice. 6 to 18 is mesmerising. Those discs will be leaving on a jet plane soon my friend.
Great opener, love the Baird and Drake, and nice to see Luke Haines (one of the great undervalued English musicians) get a slot... all round v cool indeed.
Too many favorites. I haven't heard James in forever, love the Calexico, Nick Drake & Jacques Brel especially. Oh and Cohen to boot. Happy Birthday, Mom.
