Comment:
After posting a mix celebrating 70s funk and some similar-sounding recent stuff, I thought it would be fun to do the same for 80s synthpop, with alternate tracks by current artists who emulate that magical era when men with funny hairdos and their synthesizers ruled the world. To lend authenticity to the mix, I invited my friend Cynthia to play the role of alternating dj. Now let me tell you about Cynthia. She's a (safety) dancing and walking anachronism for the eighties. Today she's wearing an oversized "Frankie Say Arm The Unemployed" t-shirt (cinched at the waist), which partially covers her tight red denim jeans. Her asymmetrical haircut is crimped and heavily gelled, and she didn't show any restraint when packing on the make-up. She hasn't listened to any new music since A Flock Of Seagulls lost their way -- and their wings. Needless to say, she was the perfect person to collaborate with on this mix. Cynthia, naturally odd, kicks things off with her imaginary boyfriend Howard Jones (and believe me, she really does have a poster of the perky pop star on her wall), and had the last word with the smug Pet Shop Boys before running off to catch a John Hughes retrospective at the multi-plex. A word about the cover: I took these photos at a club in San Diego known as Playskool in the 80s. Be the first person to correctly name the exact year, and I'll hook you up with a copy of the mix - and a date with Cynthia. That girl really needs to get out more.Feedback:
Wow.... Lots of high school flashback material here, and smartly avoiding some more obvious choices. Haven't heard all the more current songs, but Pop Goes My Heart is sure to be stuck in my head for the next three weeks now.... I'll guess the year as '86, perhaps?
1984. A touch of the Roman Holidays about that lot and anyone who can remember them has been scarred beyond repair. Kon Kan, a foolhardy exercise in shocking terribleness and I really disliked Howard Jones but then I was still mourning the death of new wave at the time. I think people in the UK were dressing like that in 1983 but if this picture is from the US it's probably 84 as you lot were often behind the times :).
This is more a Kathryn mix but I do like 9, 11 and 21.

Now all you need is a smarmy VH-1 4th-tier celebrity to narrate intros to each song. This is the genre I tried my best to avoid in the 80s (with mixed success, meaning I recognize all the 80s artists but not necessarily these particular songs); I've been much more successful at avoiding the 00's version and thus am in the dark on the other half of this. Of course, the New Order & Pet Shop Boys songs are legitimately great, and the Men Without Hats tune is a true guilty pleasure (and easily on par with the better-recognized "Safety Dance" -- and weren't those great videos back in the day?).
as far as my mind can comprehend, this could not have been executed better - give cynthia my best! the hot chip & new order songs are my favorites
What goes around... comes around. Most of the 00 trax are unknown to me, but now I've bopped over to iTMS to pick up a few. Choice!
More Moe is always a happy event! These tracks--at least many of them--harken back to my youth (nah, not really; more like my 30s) and I reflect fondly...Would love to hear this....Thoughtful and crafty...as always...
Big smiles... I think I may have dated that boy on the right!! lol
I wasn't so much into the hyper-pop of the 80's, but I guess I've softened up over the years. The Cut Copy and Hot Chip are current faves. Really fun mix - well done.

Not my favorite sub-style from either period of time, but it has its moments, and this is certainly clever and well-compiled.
nicely compiled
well well, I think I like the modern songs best here and I think the year is 85
Looks like fun! I guess I'll go with '86. I bet Cynthia and my girlfriend Beth would hit it off. She could probably sing all the odd ones by heart. We'll have to hook up for karaoke next time you two are up in LA.
I really like the execution of the mix even though it's not my favorite genre, but as Rob says it has its moments. Don't they all?
Moe, you have been disinfected, glory, glory!I have always had a soft spot for The Human League myself.
Not unlike Cynthia, I'm a bit late to the party! I'm gonna guess 1987!
I'll guess at 83. It's all ver Karma Chameleon/Temptation both of which were hits in that year over here.
I like a lot, no surprises there - my absolute favourites are the opener and closer. That Kon Kan song continues to take a battering, but I think it's just a great song, and I'm sure they had lots of fun recording it. But my absolute favourite fave here is probably tk 4, Hugh is so swoonsome in that video :)

Mesh was correct with his guess of 1987. Blasikin was right too, but Mesh buzzed in first. Cynthia can't wait to meet you!
Woops! Meant to say 1986. My bad.
Fab fab indeed. Saw Yelle live a few weeks back - highly recommended if you get the chance...
