Comment:

shannon needs some songs to keep her company on her flight to london. especially after writing me a lovely letter in which she said the following lines: "To me it is the only way I can truly find separation from the world, from life. Do you have music that simply numbs you? I know you do, I know you understand. Its tune completely absorbs you, your thoughts may wander, but only to recollect passing moments of your life. And somehow you feel sompletely at peace with yourself, but you are also on the verge of crying--no knowing whether it was the beauty of the song or the understanding of your life that evoked it. It all comes together, and you realize the totality of your existence." and so this started out as an attempt to expose her to that world for me, but i also needed to get on some of our old favorites. songs that completely place me back in the history of shannon and i. crying over nick while listening to jimmy eat world and the getupkids. dancing around her apartment to depeche mode. our brief two weeks with only beatles in her car, but it was the same album. and i think we went to omaha twice in that time. who knows, but i had heard enough of it by the end of those weeks. the songs "queen of long-legged insects." and "genevieve." are dedicated to the dear girl because that is who she is. and i hope that she feels like the queen of her living room when she listens to this. i don't expect this to make sense to others, sometimes tapes are intended to be an ode to a friendship. that the dialogue only understands the two of us. i had wished i could have put "criticism as inspiration" by pedro on this tape because that truly is what i wanted to say, but a six minute song didn't fit in with the mix.
