(2014) A new Boston band, who I first became aware of because their lineup includes the former vocalist of hard rock band Mellow Bravo - Party Bois are more of a retro new wave/dance group, but he still uses the same gritty vocal style, so the contrast is interesting. http://partybois.bandcamp.com/

from Masked Intruder (2012) One of the most fun shows I've been to all year. Among the merch was a t-shirt with the full chorus of this song on the back - it's not exactly something you can wear in most public settings.
Classic Ruins	Room Starts Spinning
from Lassie Eats Chickens (1986) A classic 80's Boston garage rock band, who I got to see at a benefit show. I mainly knew "1 + 1 < 2", which was featured on the compilation D.I.Y.: Mass Ave, but I picked up the album at their merch table.
The McKinleys	Sweet And Tender Romance
(1964) A surprisingly rockin' 60's girl group song... With a guitar solo by a then-unknown Jimmy Page.
"Weird Al" Yankovic	First World Problems

Curtis Mayfield	Move On Up
from Curtis: The Very Best Of Curtis Mayfield (1970) Another thrift store find, and I've had a gradually increasing interest in funk and soul in general.

from Heaven Tonight (1978) I saw them live this year, and this was one of the highlights of their set.

Comment:

At a certain point, my year end mixes started being less about things that actually came out that year and more "autobiographical" - thus, this is mostly music that actually came out in 2014, with a few tracks that were new discoveries for me or else are going to be tied to the year in my mind. Album I discovered just a little too late to include anything from: Taiga by Zola Jesus.
