Comment:
After making an eighties mix last month, I decided to move ahead to the early nineties for a mix that focuses on one of my favorite genres of music, shoegazing -- which arguably reached its peak in 1991. (Most of the above songs were released in that year.) For those who don't know (or never cared), the word shoegazing was created by writers from the British music tabloids to describe bands that spent more time looking at their shoes (and effects pedals) than the audience. Vocals were often buried under a pile of reverb, fuzz and swirling distortion. Most of these bands were signed by indie powerhouses Creation or 4AD, and a week wouldn't go by with at least one of them on the cover of NME or (the now defunct) Melody Maker. I consider the Cocteau Twins and the Jesus & Mary Chain to be the grandmother and grandfather of shoegazing, so that's why they kick off the mix. If I had a 120 minute tape, I would have added some American bands that adopted this sound, like the Drop Nineteens, the Swirlies, Medicine and the Belltower. Maybe next time.
Feedback:
Excellent mix, really brings me back. Makes me think that I should make a Madchester mix soon....
nice work.
nice work.
absolutely amazing ion. i'm speechless :)
i'm really impressed...but there's no sloan!!
A cool trip in the way-back machine. This mix makes me want to go & find all those forgotten CD singles in my collection. Kitchens of Distinction were another good swirly guitar group from this era. Dig the Elephantine EP.
way fun.
his name is alive and area too.
"in the way-back machine"? man, i must be getting old.

This is awesome, Ion. I remember, way back when, reading "Select" magazine (is it still around?), which had a huge article about the new "shoegazing" scene.
This is great. :-) I'm posting your mix in the next two minutes...
Select mag recently went under.
Great mix though...really captures it!

Well, it's really not a shame, re: Select Mag. - it started to suck not too long into the 90s.
Woo hoo.. someone as obsessed as I am with this stuff.. great mix! check out my "Lonesome Walls" mix.. kinda similar.. A few more runners-up would be Spacemen 3 and Loop
re: lush
since then i've tracked down a Black Session where Miki sings Blondie's Sunday Girl in french... now that was a cover...

Wow..I haven't heard 'Just like honey' in 10 years or so..I *loved* that song.
From what I recognize, this looks like a pretty good mix for a genre I only sorta cared for.
(never realized that Cocteau Twins woulda been considered shoegazing.)

Wow, I don't know how I missed this one--very nice.
Very, very cool. I had the Twins (especially the song Lorelei) pegged as precursors before I read the comments. Great, great GREAT mix. You're from SD - did you used to work at KCR? Your name is familiar to me....
Delicious... Once again, I would love to trade for this mix... Wonderful!
Big fan of the jesus & mary chain, lush and catherine wheel tracks. would love to get my hands on some of the other tracks here. do you need an apprentice?
i must say that i absolutely love this mix tape. i haven't heard it "live" but look at the songs! "just like honey", "slide away", "soon", "slowdive"... wow, i say!
nice one, but you know i love this :)
A good powerhouse mix. Of course I am biased because I dug alot of that stuff and still listen to MBV and slowdive even spiritualized.
