Comment:
The complaint that most Trinidadians have is that Harry Belafonte made calypso "safe for the white folks." Modern calypso, known as soca, or "soul calypso," however, is the real deal. Also included here is an example of the variant of soca known as chutney--soca made by the Indian population of Trinidad & Tobago. I first heard "Tiney Winey" back in 1988, but I was told that the version I heard was by the artist Crazy. Most of these songs confirm my theory about good songwriting: all you need is a phat beat and a hook, and the song will follow--no drum rolls, no choruses, no bridges, just an endlessly repetitive groove (that'll make you move); and the two great instruments: the drum machine and the synthesizer. Wine your body and have fun! This will fit on an 80-minute MiniDisc.Feedback:
nice to know someone aprecciates Trini music. is there more?
I do have more, but these were the tracks that I liked the best. "Ragga Muffin" is REAL songwriting! Peace.
