Comment:

further proof of my deepening theme-sickness, which i can't seem to get rid of. prompted by fleecy sock's "portrait of the artist" mix from a week ago, this one's full of songs about arty types (mostly painters, but not exclusively). starts out with pop hooks from bands we all love, then hits the weirdness with merzbow's tape manipulations and never looks back. the rest is mostly ambient-leaning compositions (electronic and otherwise), with a few digressions here and there. the paul mccartney track is a 17 minute piece from "liverpool sound collage," which pretty much sums up what it's about. the clash song is a bit iffy, but i had to keep it just to get a graffiti artist on here. as posted, it comes in at about 100 minutes. i'm torn as to whether i should expand to 110 minute cassette range, reduce to 90 minute cassette range, or make some painful cuts and stick with the cd format. songs with asterisks are the ones earmarked for exclusion, for various reasons (sound quality, song length, etc). couldn't find a good place for jonathan richman's songs, which is too bad. he just didn't fit in this time. title is a passing reference to a greil marcus quote about punk rock.

choppy, perhaps, but it appears inspired.

choppy? eh, not really. the only real wobble comes at the end, with the momus track. but it was so good i couldn't stand to leave it out. there are lots of different musical approaches, though, which might not be everyone's cup of tea...

I thought Balthus Bemused By Colour was by Harold Budd.

ummmm...yes, it is. i pulled it off a mix someone made for me a while ago and didn't really question who it was attributed to. i think the confusion came from it being on an album attributed to brian eno, where he did do *some* of the songs (although not all). i'll fix the goof.

Great concept, great mix. I love what you are doing here, nice one, Sr. Teapin. I think a trade of sorts is in order soon... I dont know much of this stuff, but i am pretty vibed that there is a clash song about Futura 2000. mental.

I think Bauhaus' Antonin Artaud would've fit in nicely in the beginning of this mix.
