Comment:

"to understand balinese music, it is useful to realize that the gamelan is not so much an orchestra as one single large instrument fragmented into several small ones, something like a huge communal piano played by four to thirty hands." - gamelan virtuouses liner notes. this is a double cd venture into the hallucinogenic, otherworldy sounds of indonesia's heavily percussive gamelan music. disc one serves up a haphazard overview of a few of the many different styles and instruments commonly used, while disc two takes a stab at western artists who integrated gamelan into their own work (the kecak track is the only exception - it's traditional but fits better with the modern stuff. kecak is a full chorus using their voices to imitate a gamelan orchestra and it ends up sounding completely insane). as most of the actual performers on disc one were village orchestras that were never properly identified on the compilations i took these tracks from, i resorted to using the name of the style as the name of the artist. but don't be fooled: i don't have the background to distinguish one style from another. nothing blurs the line between ancient and avant quite as much as this. soundtrack to tomorrow's out of body experience.

This is one of the most adventurous mixes I have seen here in along while. An educational, entertaining, mind expanding, extravaganza. Love to hear this one. Impressive to say the least.

Very cool teapin. Your mixes never cease to impress me. Now why didn't I think of Angklung Daun Kutus for my AOTM Debuts mix! (BTW, I'll have feedback for your excellent Where the Girls Are mix one of these days. I promise)

Teapin rockin' the spot -- woooooooo! Always an interesting ride :P Gamelan makes me insane. I fell asleep in an indoor hammock during a downpour listening to a gamelan ensemble, knowing I was in Toronto but feeling like the middle of a rainforest. Yummy to the tenth power!

Rockin minds, teapin. nicely done. my old university had a full gamelan (NIU) and they would rockit for free shows all the time. it makes my brain itch in all the right places. i would love to hear this one, your mixes are solid as hell. zendogamelandub.
