MIX

tangerThis mix features original versions of songs that were overshadowed by their cover versions. At first I thought this mix was an original idea, until I discovered that at least two others (alabmudclay and cerdovolante, who I'll be trading with) had "covered" it already. D'oh! This mix shares a couple songs with those excellent mixes, but the rest of it is new enough to merit its existence in the AOTM archives IMO. Thanks to Rob Conroy for "letting me do whatever I wanted" with Shuggie Otis. Anyone who can tell me why I placed Gloria Jones and T. Rex back to back is as big as a musical dweeb as I am. Some additional notes on the above (apologies in advance if I occasionally sound too much like Casey Kasem): BRUCE WOOLLEY - Woolley co-wrote "Video..." with Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn, who went on to form the Buggles. Woolley's version, recorded with the Camera Club, went nowhere. The Buggles version and video launched MTV. THE CLIQUE - This Texas band originally released this song as a weak-selling single in 1969. THE NERVES - This trio, which included Peter Case (Plimsouls) and Paul Collins (the Beat), released just one EP in 1976, which included "...Telephone." PAPER LACE - Their version of "Billy" actually was a number one hit in the UK in early 1974. Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods took the same song to the top of the charts in the US later that year. But don't feel bad for Paper Lace - "The Night Chicago Died" was a US smash hit in 1974. ROBERT GORDON - This rockabilly artist was the first to record Bruce Springsteen's "Fire." He was also the first to record Marshall Crenshaw's "Someday, Someway," which was a hit for Crenshaw when he released his debut album a year later. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - "Blinded By the Light" was one of three Springsteen songs that Manfred Mann's Earth Band covered, and it became Bruce's first number one hit in 1976. Still, does anyone know what the hell this song is about? SHOCKING BLUE - Although this band is better known for being the first to record "Venus" ( a hit for Bananarama as well), they also gave Nirvana their first single. JOHN KONGOS - Kongos had a top 4 single on the UK charts with this song in 1971. Happy Mondays truncated the title to "Step On" and took it to number 5 on the UK charts in 1990. CAMILLE YARBROUGH - Okay, I'm cheating a bit on this one. Fatboy Slim actually sampled Yarbrough's voice from this song from her only album, released in 1975, on the song "Praise You." Thanks for reading.

Congratulations spacelab! Tou win the gold Dave Marsh statuette. Sorry Rob - you snooze, you looze! Not only were Jones and Bolan lovers (they had a kid together), but Jones was driving when Bolan was killed in a car accident in 1977.

Can I at least get the gold Greil Marcus statuette as a runner-up? And hey, what about a prize for my Steely Dan info a few mixes back? ;-)

Very enlightening. I'd love to hear the originals I'm not familiar with, especially that Gloria Jones track. Am I the only person who actually likes her backing vocals on Zinc Alloy?

Fine mix, Ion. I'm working on a mix of this sort myself (I, too, thought I'd come up with an original concept), so I'd better go look at the others you mentioned. I appreciated the extensive notes (some might say excessive, but we know better).

Ion - saw your comment on my mix "Hot Stuff Under The Covers" and just had to check this out. This is totally awesome. Biggest surprise for me was "Video Killed The Radio Star" - everybody knows it was the first video to be played on MTV, but who knew it was a cover?

I happened to stumble on this compilation when I was looking for music facts on Google. That's why I decided to submit my own compilations with the same theme. I think I may have found some stuff that can interest you since you have found stuff that absolutely interest me. I Have a Vol. 5 in the works and probably can get it made now, thanks to you.
