Comment:
Dangdut (rhymes with "Wong's suit") is a kind of pop music that originated in Indonesia, but is also found in Malaysia. It sounds sort of like Indian film music crossed with Cuban salsa, but with a significant Andean (South America) influence, by way of Hong Kong. The name refers to the sound the double drum (it resembles bongoes, not tabla) makes after each even beat. Extremely infectious, but sadly, there are only five dangdut songs readily available in the USA. The biggest star of this genre is the Indonesian singer Rhoma Irama. The biggest female dangdut singer, Elvie Sukaesih, is heard on track 16. Indonesian dangdut is more authentic, I think, but I couldn't tell you if the other tracks are Indonesian or Malaysian (after doing some research, probably the former) in origin. A very interesting paper on Indonesian music (including dangdut) is at http://polyglot.lss.wisc.edu/mpi/workshop98/papers/sutton.htm. Thanks to http://www.heruweb.com for their help (and mp3 downloads). This will fit on an 80-minute MiniDisc.Feedback:
