THE BEATLES - "George Harrison Anthology" [2CD]
Comment:
2 CDs. I had been considering doing this for a while before George passed away, but finally got the nerve, time and inspiration to do it shortly after George's passing. All of George's EMI Beatles recordings are present here. This includes covers and Lennon/McCartney originals on which he sang lead vocals. Everything is mainly in chronological order, with a few fudgings here and there to ensure better flow.
I included many bootleg tracks, but tried to only include the more important ones, and not go too overboard. (It was often difficult to avoid including multiple versions of songs...two seemed reasonable while three seemed like overkill). I also included some of the more interesting selections from the anthologies. Keep in mind, however, that my choices are, of course, subjective. Also, I passed on all BBC and most Decca tracks because I find them to be a little lackluster. The only tracks here from the BBC sessions are the spoken word "Just A Rumour" and the "I'm George and I play a guitar" intro, which made a nice intro to the entire collection. The only Deccas are "Three Cool Cats" and "The Sheik Of Araby," both of which appear on "Anthology 1."
Finally, I added many illuminating interview bits with George to give the collection context. I find they do much to characterize George as musician, humourist, artist and person, and therefore give the collection a more complete picture of what the man was like. I even added George's classic scene from "A Hard Day's Night" to disc one, as well as his brief comments from the Morecambe and Wise show.
The result, in my ears, is a respectful, illuminating, definitive, entertaining portrait of "Beatle George," which does the man, his music and his life in the '60s justice. And, most importantly, it makes for a wonderful listen. Artwork echoes the original Anthology to the letter (except for my newly made George collage on the cover).

Feedback:
Hmm... interesting idea, for sure. The only problem with it is that there are quite a few of these ("Devil in Her Heart", "Everybody'sTrying...", "Beethoven", "I Need You", "You Like Me Too Much", "Blue Jay Way", "Savoy Truffle" and, to a lesser degree, "Within You") are among my very least favorite Beatles recordings.
Great idea.
Oh, add "I'm Happy..." to that list, as well.
Wow. Wonderful.
I agree with Rob, but it also contains some of the finest Beatles' songs IMO -- It's All Too Much, Taxman, If I Needed Someone and I Want to Tell You.
Wow, that's a great mix. Far more exhaustive than the George mix I did a few months back, and it's nice to see "Sour Milk Sea" and "Circles" (from the Esher tape, right?) on there. The spoken word is a nice touch as well.
I understand some of these songs could be viewed as weaker efforts...but the idea was to represent everything he did with the Beatles in the stduio..with a few added goodies. It's a tribute, if you will. By the way, Rob, I quite like "I Need You" and "Within You Without You." And I *love* "Savoy Truffle." And yes wrongwayup, the demos are the Esher tapes.
Um, *studio.
great work, Vinz. I like most of George's stuff with the Beatles.
I understand the intent of your mix and applaud it, Vinz. I merely pointed out that there were a large number of tunes that I, personally, was not very into.
I gotcha.
good mix but a little too much speech ;), no just kidding come on and do a vol 2 now the solo years
Way to go! I'm a big George fan, myself, and love what you've done here! I agree that it would be really nice to see you put out another volume of his solo work!
Keymaster.., outstanding! There certainly was a "George aesthetic" to his music. This brings it together.
I have been toying with the idea of doing a solo anthology. The only problem is it wouldn't be as comprehensive as this volume, since all of George's solo output fits on more than just two discs. :-p In other words, I'm not sure how I'd want to structure it yet. Ideas?
Very nice work. This is a great, and obviously lovingly produced, tribute...and great art work too. Excellent.
