Comment:
This mix came about after Ion and I met this past summer in San Diego. We had traded mixes over the past year, and when I had a chance to visit SD, I got in touch with Ion, who suggested he and his lovely fiance (now wife), Yvette, show us around Old Town. And that they did. We had a wonderful evening together. Anyway, this mix is the result of my suggestion that we do a mix of "W. Aussie VS. W. Coast." áTracks 1-3 are from the 1960s; 4-6, 70s; 7-9, 80s; 10-13, 90s; 14 - 2000s and track 15, from the 90s.T1:Robby Snowden - he was a pretty boy pop idol; T2:The Times tended towards cabaret but made some perfect pop singles, vocals by Terry Walker; T3:Johnny Young - BeeGees cover. áJohnny was a 60s TV host; T4:Scientists - Perfect pop from the pre-swampy ("swampland") line up; T5:Manikins - an awesome band, machine-like precision live; T6:Victims - One of the greatest punk bands of all time; T7:Stems - sixties retro from 80s, feat. Freo boy Dom Mariani (DM3); T8:Triffids - A band of many styles who were better at pop than pomp - featured the now deceased David McComb; T9:Marigolds - Shadowed the Stems;
T10:Healers - From the sticks (Bunbury, WA - 2 hours south of Perth), and like a heavier Gun Club. áFeat. Craig Hallsworth, who was in the Bamboos, as well as a few others, now solo; T11:Rainyard - Janglophile pop genius; T12:D.
McComb - Self deprecating, joyous & one of the best love songs ever; T13:Adam Said Galore - Post rock influenced indie rock; T14:Mukaisake - See ASG - feat. members of ASG, as well as others; T15:Summer Suns - Now, although this was my boyfriend Kim's band, I have to say that the Summer Suns are probably one of the best power pop bands of all time - may they rest in peace (and hopefully rise again one day - as soon as I convince him to write pop songs again!!) áThanks once again to Kim for all his help on my side of the mix - if you ever need to know *anything* about Aussie music (or *all* music for that matter), he is the person to turn to. Thanks also to him for helping me
with the comments. áCHEERS!!
ION: Yes, this is us hanging out in Old Town, San Diego's oldest tourist trap (not sure how the margarita glass got in the photo). Anyway, on my half of the mix, songs 1-4 are from the 60s; 5-8 the 70s; 9-13, the 80s and 14-16, the 90s. I won't go into as much detail about the tracks as Sue did, since most of the artists should already be familiar to you. My record collection is sorely lacking in San Diego bands, so I had to cheat a bit and utilize some of our neighbors up north. I had to include the Union Gap since keyboardist/songwriter Gary Withem used to give me private music lessons back in the day. He now teaches band at a local high school. Javier Escovedo of the Zeros was attending high school in San Diego while his band played clubs in LA on weekends. His younger brother Mario formed the Dragons about ten years ago. Former MTV personality Mojo Nixon is now back in San Diego, spinning records by Van Halen and Journey on the awful KGB. Thanks to Sport/Sean for the Turtles and Valis for Shuggie Otis. And one more thing, since I used 16 artists and Sue only used 15, I guess I win. Woo hoo!

Feedback:
Wonderful! Everybody wins with this one...., great liner notes, too! (I guess there was no pun intended Sue on the Marigolds shadowing the Stems.. :)the Rainyard description interests, much. Ion, great stuff. I'm far more familiar with the bands here...(wish I was in California)..you're welcome for the Shuggie, he's a winner. Mojo just lost it after he and Skid split...serves him right. (Although he'd be better served with a huge margarita, like the one in the picture...must be from someone else's table in the foreground, right? Judging by the grins you two haven't had a drop...)
is that margarita ridiculous size or you just happy anyway, great mix and really fun to see what you look like, if you ever come to sweden so just call ;)
Hey! This is a superb mix and a wonderful idea. I must admit I know nothing of side one, but side two is much more familiar to me. Great love and Doors picks. Great to have you back Ion, and Sue has contributed to an excellent hybrid tape!
Looks Fab. Looking at the pic, I would have expected the Summer Suns doing "Girl in a Mexican Restaurant" (actually that is the only song I have by them on some single(i think) laying around).
youza!
an epic piece by 2 heavy hitters. the site should prob'ly have a "profiles" section; so's we can see what ay'one looks like! great mix !

what an attractive woman
as for the fellow, i don't doubt he's a charmer
Although Ion didn't mention it - if anyone wants a copy - let Ion or I know and we'll work out a suitable arrangement. Oh, and as far as the "winning" goes - what the hell does that mean?! ;-) And to Tom - I'm impressed that you have "girl in a mexican restaurant" I would've used that, but as I only had a minute or less on the tape, it wouldn't have fit (even though "girl" is probably only 1 1/2 minutes or less).
Great job guys, this looks awesome!
FYI in my and Mike the pikes hometown have -10C, i just wanted you to know but we will for sure have a white christmas ;)
This is super great, and such a wonderful idea. I'd gladly trade for it. See what happens when AOTM-ers team up? It's a tag team of rock and roll.
i've wanted to do something like this, but i think that rob and i would kill each other over the selections before it actually got done. great work guys (and ion, that mix is coming your way soon...i promise!)
oooooh... very nice
Wow, WOw, WOW! Really cool.
great idea sue and ion.
Well, don't you guys just look darling? I would never do a mix like this because Norfolk, VA does NOT foster interesting artists so far as I've found. Anyway, very engaging mix.
