Comment:
Yup, it's another tribute mix. This time the benefactor is the Who, who are just as famous (and infamous) now as they ever were thanks to recent commercials, TV theme songs, deaths, arrests, coffee table books and CD reissues. This collection focuses on covers of songs from their pre-Who's Next output, as well as a smattering of songs influenced by the band. Also included are some radio jingles and one song by their original incarnation, the High Numbers. Thanks to the Ethereal Dawn for the Bowie, Saaf for the Jam, P the Swede for Yvonne Ellman, Thomas Mohr for the Sweet and Rob Conroy/Sean Lally for the High Numbers, which was taken from their amazing Into the Mouth of Modness mix. Some additional notes: Pudding -- their poppy version of Magic Bus was released as a single a year before the Who recorded it; Buffalo Tom and Sugar -- both were recorded live at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago; Who Orchestra -- a pseudonym used by the Graham Bond Organisation when they contributed the b-side of the Who's "Substitute" single. The pig in this case was producer Shel Talmy, who was lodged in a contractual dispute with the Who; Mose Allison -- the original version of a song the Who recorded on the Live at Leeds album, as well as in the studio; The Assembled Multitude -- a Philadelphia studio group who had more chart success with this song in 1970 than either of the Who's singles from Tommy; Swervedriver -- a one-take recording of the b-side to "I'm A Boy." These guys also did an excellent cover of "Magic Bus." Shaun Cassidy -- okay, I'll probably get some flack for this one! Sure, the Breeders also do a fine cover of this song, but how many of you have heard this teen heartthrob's version? It was produced by none other than Todd Rundgren.
Feedback:
So here it ees in all its freakin' glory . . . Looks fantastico, indeed. Pity you didn't include that German version of "Happy Jack", though. ;) P.S.: Who knows what Homer does behind closed doors?
Looks amazing. I'd love to trade for this, if you're interested!
this is pretty damn cool. wish i could get it.
Looks great to me (and you're welcome, no problem). I'd like one of these in our next trade, my friend.
Excellent. Love that Lord Sitar version. And I'd like to start the flack giving for your inclusion of Shaun Cassidy...ewww ;-)
Really nice, some great picks on here...I'd love a copy.
Shaun Cassidy? Yvonne Ellman? Wow. You got guts, kid. And a lotta moxie - I like that!
Looks great Ion.
I am no one special to say that, but do I smell this 'mix of the week' flavour ???
I've got to say, this looks really cool. There's tons of stuff here that I would love to hear.
Ion, this looks magnificent! We must trade again soon!
Very cool, I would love to hear the Shaun Cassidy track. Looks awesome.
I can't explain my fascination over this one, Ion! Call me the Seeker!
you're welcome, That Yvonne Elliman track is great, but The timing of this mix hmmmm, Swedish national TV broadcast a documenatry on Who last week too. but of course the music is still great
wonderful ion!
all this talk of people not being cool enough to trade with me is making me awfully nervous. and trust me, after you all see what my current project mix is, you will all laugh and I will endure scrutiny. ;) and it looks like you've done your fair share of trading and I can certainly see why.
I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile, but your collection of amusingly lame Who covers runs far deeper than mine, so I won't even bother now. I remember finding an old vinyl copy of Shaun Cassidy's Wasp album years ago and being impressed with his surprising cool factor -- obscure early Talking Heads cover before they'd become popular? Gotta give the guy credit. (Of course, it didn't sell and that was the end of the line for Shaun.) Sure wish I could find that one on cd...
