Comment:

The evolution of a mix. I wanted to make a mix featuring two classic American songs, This Land Is You Land and Old Man River. No matter what style(s) of music you like, these two songs have passed the test of time. This mix would be easy. Start with a base stock of Beatles, Dylan and Motown. Add some John Lee Hooker, Miles and Coltrane for spice. Put in The Strokes and White Stripes per taste and then some of my orginial secrets. Didn't happen. As I was playing the two songs in my head, two themes arose. The Nation and politics. Woody Guthrie's song was an answer to Irving Berlin's God Bless American. Paul Robeson was a brillant, multitalented man born the wrong color and at the wrong time. Since it is election year I decided to make this a geo-political mix. I started the mix off the the Chicago tune (still relevent more than 30 years later) to ask some questions and then did what Woody would have done, "hitched" aroung the country to see whats going on. The results are in.

Excellent mix! You could have succumbed to using Alice Cooper's somewhat gimmicky ELECTED, but you stuck with true Americana covering places and mindsets from all across the land. Given room, I could only suggest Michelle Shocked's Alaska, and maybe the Beach Boys' Hawaii. But maybe those would change the desired tone. Well done!

I like this! From a Brit perspective, I'm surprised you included Clash, Elton John and David Bowie. A WORTHY MIX, nevertheless!
