amelia fletcher : twee queen
Comment:
This is my first crack at a single artist mix, and who better to receive the privilege than indie pop princess Amelia Fletcher. I've loved her ever since I first discovered a seven-inch single by Talulah Gosh hidden away in Tower Records' import bin in the mid-80s. Along with fellow singer Elizabeth Price, Oxford-based Talulah Gosh made some of the most infectious girlie pop ever made with guitars, drums and bass. I strongly recommend picking up Backwash on K Records, which contains their entire output. Price left the band, and they reformed as Heavenly, who released four excellent albums and a handful of singles. In 1996, tragedy struck the band when drummer Mathew Fletcher (Amelia's brother) committed suicide, but they soldiered on under a new name, Marine Research. They recorded one album before splitting into yet another group, Tender Trap, which brings us up to date (whew!). Fleshing out this mix are Amelia's many side projects and guest appearances, as well as a solo single she released shortly before joining Heavenly. I have to buy a round for DJ Lunch Boy and Stephen Royce, who contributed a couple songs.QUIZ TIME: There is one song above that Amelia does not sing on, but plays a musical instrument instead. Be the first to name the song (and the instrument) and a copy of the mix will be yours forever.

Feedback:
ooh if there's a pile in San Diego with my name on it, put this one there, I can only guess your question but probarbly Nick Heyward sing himself or ?
I'll go with the wedding present song. But it's a guess.
Okay, I'm completely wrong. Would love to trade anyway.
i'm in love with this mix...
Since a copy will be mine in any case I guess I can forget about the quiz query (which I couldn't answer anyway) and admit to the shameful fact that I think I never heard any of this (except for the track by the Marriage Gift on which Amelia guests). So: Teach Me, Tiger . . . Rrroarrr.
I only know Heavenly and a few others...I'd love to hear it..I'm going to guess the pooh sticks-sweet baby james...and the instrument...drums?
I'm not sure why my name wasn't included in the last post, but this time I'll leave a good rating...
hmmm...may be a bug with the new feature, this is g.a.b. if the system doesn't pick up my moniker.
_______
Missed this yesserday & dunno a thing about Ms. Fletcher (and, not knowing a thing about her, I surely don't know which song she doesn't sing on).
But I do know Moe (er, somewhat...well OK we traded once)...and I trust his muse as relates to even artists unbeknownst t'me! (unknown artists who I don't know on which songs they don't sing, that is, specifically) : )

WOW! I'd really lost track of her after Heavenly - had no idea that she sang with so many other fine outfits. Man, Moe - this is a great tribute! Hmmmm, I really don't recall her singing on that Pooh Sticks song, though there is a sweet female voice on it - is that her? In any event, please save me a copy of this - it rules.
Fantastic Ion! I loved Talulah Gosh, but sort of lost track of Ms. Fletcher. I give this mix, uhm, 5 asteroids!
A touch late, but this does look tremendous. Very cool stuff, Ion.
I have to say that I don't know who she is though I have heard of Talulah Gosh but never heard anything by them...BUT i'M SURE IT'S GREAT....gawd i hate these F***** asteroids!
What Dom said Ion.

Nice.
She looks the part of a twee queen. Your cover art screams "1988." I rate this mix 14.37 chocolate chip cookies.
Awesome, ion! i didn't realise she played/guested in so many bands.
Meanwhile I sit here completely cluless as to who she is and the fact she exists at all. But, the "King of girlpop" knows. Good enough for Moe is all I need to know.
Of course you know I want this mix. Whatta ya say?
I had a go at the quizz a few days ago ("Will you wear love?", recorder)but it hasn't been put on the web yet. As regards the rating, I only know some of the songs in the album. So I'd rather not say anything about a record that I don't know to a good extent.
nice!
It's funny how I know nothing on this mix but am desperately curious about it.
hey , did we never get an answer ;)
oh man, this looks incredible, yay for twee pop.
This mix looks great.
As for the quiz, I'll guess "Goldmining" and guitar. I haven't heard that specific song but I don't recall her singing on the Sportique stuff I heard and I'm pretty sure I read that she plays guitar with them.

sigh, i do so adore amelia. i remember seeing her for the first time, in marine research and i was just in love.
but really, why so much heavenly and not very much talulah gosh? personally, i.....
Wow -- I had just started working on an Amelia F. mix myself when I stumbled upon this. I think I'll just stick to her actual bands, but did she sing lead on any of the others? Also, doesn't the other singer do lead on TG's "Don't Go Away" (sounds like Amelia did backup)? Not that it would invalidate it for your mix.
Er, probably too old a mix to get a reply. Anyway, I had way more Heavenly on my mix than TG because (1)they made more albums, and (2) they were a better band.
Also meant to say that "Don't Go Away" is my fave TG song.

The question I have is why 3 songs from the last Heavenly album (including b-side Art School) and only one each from the preceding albums?
