Comment:

Luxuria Music was an online radio station with an emphasis on lounge, '60s go-go pop, lush film music, crime jazz, swanky modern party music, and a variety of other styles that met half-way between sophistication and kitsch. It was the brainchild of Peter Bonerz (son of Bob Newhart Show veteran Peter Bonerz), Chuck Kelley (curator of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack), and The Millionaire (the guitarist for Combustible Edison). Luxuria's heyday ran from 1999 to 2001, during which time it built a substantial community of listeners. Throughout the broadcast day, you could interact with the live DJs (many aspiring L.A. performers) through webcams and chat-rooms. In-studio appearances ranged from The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson to Steve Soderbergh's soundtrack composer Cliff Martinez. The station was based in Santa Monica and owned by Enigma Digital. After the Internet boom went bust, Enigma Digital was purchased by Clear Channel, who promptly pulled the plug, ending a very exciting and tasteful experiment in interactive online radio. Recently Luxuria Music has been resurrected in a more modest form -- check it out at www.luxuriamusic.com.

The selection on these CD mixes represents some of the songs that were in heavy rotation on the Luxuria playlist during the time that I was listening. Though I am missing a lot of Luxuria's signature songs because they're not in my collection, I tried to replicate the general feel and variety of the station.

(By the way, I am willing to trade CDs of these mixes via postal mail, provided you have some interesting mixes to offer in exchange.)

Hmmmm, I'm pretty intrigued. Let me know if I have anything you'd like to trade for. Your descriptions sounds pretty boss.
