Comment:
The 31st of August 2004. That was the day of the very first time I had the great privilege of seeing my most favourite band in the world... The Cure. After 8 long years of waiting it was finally actually going to happen. There were so many close calls and disappointments, but now nothing stood in my way.
I made this mix as a bit of a preparation for the night. Some songs are stunningly relevant, i.e. White Town's "Wanted" http://www.lyricsdepot.com/white-town/wanted.html It seemed to foretell the evening. While others were for kicks, or just conjured up thoughts and memories of The Cure "I Don't Want to Get Over You" http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/intermission/idontwanttogetoveryou.htm takes me back to being in that state of absolute Cure euphoria. Franz Ferdinand's "Darts Of Pleasure" reminds me of The Stranglers and they always make me think of Robert Smith since they were one of his favourite bands when he was younger. Some of these songs just somehow set the right atmosphere or mood "Ready For It", "So Alive" and "Leave The Planet" which is actually what I felt I was going to do that night.
My Cousin, Sister and I went to the show together, so I made 3 copies of the mix for us all as a sort of souvenir although it would be an evening we should never forget. "But Not Tonight" is here for my cousin especially, since it was the song she listened to on the way to see The Cure for her first time back in 1996. I hoped it might bring back the same sensation of that night for her.
"Faith" is my absolute favourtie Cure song and this version from back in 1989 is also one of my favourites being over 17 minutes long! My first and foremost hope for that night was to hear Robert sing the lyrics "... perfect moments wait... if only we could stay... please say the right words or cry like the stone-white clown and stand... lost forever in a happy crowd." And indeed it happened! I heard those words and the wish came true. Robert did the honorary Faith medley with some lyrics from another one of my favourites "2 Late" being tossed in the song as it is in the version on this mix, "...So I wait for you where I always wait...".
All and all I made this mix to serve as a sort of a memorandum, something to transport me back the that wonderful evening whenever I listened to it... at least until I find the bootleg!
