Comment:

I not a big fan of southern rock but The Allman Brothers were a cut above the rest. This is the best I can do with 80 minutes. I would have liked to added Whipping Post, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed and Kind Of Bird.

The Allman Bros. were the one So. Rock band I just couldn't take - though I do love "Melissa" - leaving off "Whipping Post" is a bonus as far as I'm concerned - there's a very long, painful story behind this dislike, involving a meathead playing "Whipping Post" for about 7 hours straight.

Nice work, Terry. I like everything they did up to and including "Brothers and Sisters". After that, they went a bit run of the mill, but before that they were a great bluesy rock band. I can sympathise with Joe when he talks about someone playing "Whipping Post" for seven hours straight. I have a similar intense dislike of the "Let's Dance" album by David Bowie, for the same reason.

Nice. I've always kind of liked the Allman Brothers, but for some reason I've never spent a lot of time with their music.

I'm also not a big fan of southern rock but did like the early years of the Allman Brothers. My best of mix would absolutely include Whipping Post and Elizabeth Reed. One of my craziest concert experiences was seeing the Allman Brothers with the Band and the Grateful Dead at Watkins Glen.

Terry you made a valiant effort at the impossible. As an Allman's fan since '72 it's impossible to squeeze it all into one disc. Some songs still give me goosebumps when I hear them live. Revival, Nobody Knows, Stormy Monday, Soulshine, etc. and since my friends all have grown kids and even a grandkid or two popping up now, No One To Run With is becoming my theme song.

I can sympathize with your dilemma; hard to whittle the Allmans down to 80 minutes. Looks like you did a fine job.

I wish you woulda added in Memory of Elizabeth Reed. But don't worry, the mix is still amazing! Melissa, Blue Sky, Jessica, and Statesboro Blues stand out for me...and I second your thoughts on the Allman's and southern rock in general.

It's tough to do the Allmans in one disc. (weakling that I am, I would have done 2, as usual). I still have NEVER heard Eat a Peach. Live at the Fillmore East is the only one I have, and I have the feeling that it is their pinnacle. agree? What is the next essential after that one? After the guy on American Idol did it a few weeks back (I watch it with my wife as an exercise in bonding - and now I am into it!), I asked the folks at work how they thought it compared to the Allmans' performance. No one had ever heard it, so I just shut up.
