Comment:
Whenever I end up doing yardwork with my dad (which is increasingly often when spring comes) and have the radio going he'll always tell me to change it to something more "subtle", so this tape is an attempt to put together a set of music we can both find tolerable. I also tried to make about every other track a song which he would know. "New Slang" is probably way past mix cd/tape cliche by now, but I felt like I had to include it just because it's the most "dad-rock" Shins song. I really wanted to use the Zombies version of "This Will Be Our Year", but the OKGO one was a decent replacement in a pinch. And though it wasn't really planned out, "Cecilia" and "Hey Julie" turned out to sound great next to each other. By the way, did some yard work just today and side A anyway has passed the test.Feedback:
Nice Eels and Nick Drake picks.
Sounds fairly chilled for work. I do like.
Some of the best "subtle" pop masterpieces I've ever heard on here: "Hey Julie", "Railroad Man", "Lost Cause", "Me & Julio", "Annie Waits", Beach Boys, CCR, Byrds, Flaming Lips, and of course "New Slang" which may be cliche but can still be a welcome sight if not just used to prove one's "cred". I think it belongs perfectly on here. Terrific sonic consistency you managed to achieve here (amidst such great songs, to boot)
That's my favorite Bob Dylan song. Great mix.
If this were a yardwork mix just for me it'd have more fast/upbeat stuff (I've used the "soundtrack to mundane tasks" mix I posted up earlier for that purpose a few times), but I erred towards the mellow almost folk-ish side because that's how my dad's tastes run. And I have found the chill vibe sort of helps ease yardwork frustrations a bit.
