Comment:

After nine volumes of mostly peppy and hook-filled songs, the Girlie Pop series mellows out with a mix featuring gorgeous female vocals and delicate musical backing. In fact, XTC's Andy Partridge recently called Judee Sill's "The Kiss" the most beautiful song ever recorded. He'll get no argument from me. A flower goes out to Sport! for his masterful cross-fading skills, which makes this mix flow seamlessly from start to finish. Anyone up for a quiz? There are five cover versions on this mix. I'll spot you "In The Wee Small Hours," originally performed by Frank Sinatra. Be the first to name the other four (and the original artists) and a copy will land gently in your mailbox.

Keith Jarett, Wes Montgomery, Count Basie and Rosemary Clooney? What a lovely cover, she kinda looks like a blonde Bj÷rk.

Delightful. Maybe a bit too sleepy for my normally hyper self, but some great picks.

Lots of nice picks here. Particularly like astrud, this mortal coil, and of course the judee sill. I recently picked up her two rhino handmade cds... wonderful albums.

I know next to none of these (at least the particular songs by each band), but this can go at the top of my end of our 2007 trade pile, since it looks really interesting.

This looks really cool. I'll take a stab at the covers: "Up in the Air" Husker Du? "Late Night" Syd Barrett? "Man on the Silver Mountain" Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow? That's as far as I have good guesses for. My last guess would be the Astrud Gilberto track because she didn't write her own songs, did she?

The GPs continue to be excellent. Is that Siouxsie Sioux's Creatures there?

After coming in last in all your previous contests I think I'll sit this one out. ;-)

That closing combo's a thing of beauty Ion. I think Todd got three right, so I'll take a guess on King Kong being a Daniel Johnston/Jad Fair cover.

Your mixes are lovely. And I agree, "The Kiss" is fucking gorgeous. By the way, re: 20-minute version of Layla - I already rewrote the song for her! 8)
